It's just talk. I mean, going into the Winter Meetings, what are they going to say? No, we're not interested in adding pitching? That being said, historically, Stearns has been against signing pitchers to long term contracts. I don't see why that would change. Nor do I see them signing two Free Agent pitchers. The Mets have a stockpile of pitching talent coming up through their system. McLean, Sproat and Tong are just the first of the bunch. Some will get to Flushing and some will be trade capital. I think the trade route is a more likely scenario to add a top of the rotation starter.
More likely, yes. I'd include either Tong or Sproat in the right deal but not both. But the market changes (look at the Cease deal) and Stearns, I'd think, knows he has to adjust. If the trade ask for a good starter is too high, I think he and Cohen will bite the bullet and overpay. And I'd keep Senga rather than trading him for peanuts.
I'm fine with parking Kodai as the fifth (or even sixth) starter and working backwards from what we did last year. The big question is whether we bring in another starter or go with what we have now and hope Manaea is healthy for the whole season.
Given the circumstances, I'd go with King and use the savings from a massive contract offer to Valdez to build out a savage bullpen. Let's shorten the game, get five innings a start across the board to keep everyone fresh and go from there.
I’m sorry. What I saw from Tong and Sproat no matter where they are in their development was all I needed to see. If you don’t have the goods now or yet what will change to get you there? McClean showed us whether he was ready or not his stuff plays. Tong, is that fastball somehow not going to be straight headed over home plate? Sproat is a reliever who doesn’t know it yet. Tong is not going to add 6 inches of height and 40 more pounds to make his ball “heavy”. If their hype is enough I’d ship them both out to the American League and deal with the next crop of arms coming up. One outta 3 ain’t bad and Big Mac looks like a top of the rotation guy to me.
King (if healthy) for 4 years max sounds OK—and something Stearns might go along with. And Imai for more years (since he's younger) works, too.
McLean, King, Imai, Peterson, Holmes and Menaea or Senga make a good rotation. The latter guys could be in the pen.
