The hype has been worth it so far with Tobias Myers! ✍️
The Mets are off to a good start here in 2026 due in large part to a resurgent pitching staff. Through the first ten games at least, the rotation does not resemble the group that torpedoed the team’s postseason hopes a season ago.
New ace Freddy Peralta will make his third Mets start tonight after pitching well enough on opening day and then delivering an excellent outing in St. Louis. Nolan McLean’s filthy stuff has been on full display in his first two outings, Clay Holmes has been fantastic, and Kodai Senga looks like the version of himself that the Mets desperately need. David Peterson’s outing in St. Louis was really the only bad start the Mets have had thus far, but he blanked the Pirates for 5.1 innings in his previous outing.
The Mets revamped backend bullpen trio of Devin Williams, Luke Weaver, and Brooks Raley have combined to not allow a run across 11.2 innings. Huascar Brazoban has surrendered just two baserunners and no runs in 5.2.
With so many positives throughout the pitching staff, would you believe me if I said I haven’t even mentioned yet the guy that has been the team’s most important arm to date?
Well, you should, because it’s Tobias Myers.
For all the good things the Mets starting staff has done so far, they’re still averaging just under 5.5 IP per outing.
This club has played three extra-inning games already, and bar for a couple of recent lopsided games in San Francisco, every contest has been close.
The reason the back part of the Mets bullpen has been so dominant is because those guys have not had to be overworked at all. Williams and Raley have not pitched back-to-back days yet. Weaver and Brazoban have each done it just once.
Myers has brought the Mets something they truly had been missing. A legitimate old-school long man, capable of saving the rest of the bullpen and eating multiple innings every time out. And doing it at a high level.
The righty has pitched in four games so far. Let’s dive into them.
After Peralta got through five innings on opening day, he came in with the Mets well ahead and fired three excellent innings to keep most of the other relievers out of the game.
Four days later in St. Louis, with the Mets up by two in the 6th, Holmes was running out of gas. Myers was summoned to finish that inning and pitch the 7th, at which point he was able to hand it over to Raley and Williams to secure the victory.
In the rubber game with the Cardinals, Myers was probably the last arm available in the bullpen and was brought in in extra innings. He pulled a Houdini act to escape the 10th inning without the free runner scoring, and nearly did in the 11th as well if not for a well-placed parachute fly ball from Masyn Winn.
Most recently, in San Francisco, after Holmes went seven scoreless innings, Myers came in to clean up the final two frames without allowing a baserunner.
He’s been everything the club could have hoped for as a bridge between the starters and late-inning short relievers. And he’s been fearless when it’s been necessary to come in with men on base to finish a frame and then throw another one.
Myers is also capable of hopping in at times and giving the Mets a spot start if they need him to. That’s not to say that he’s really stretched out right now, but quite frankly, it’s preferable if the Mets were to give him a start over Sean Manaea right now, even if it’s only for 3-4 innings.
His cutter has been his best pitch in terms of breakability by far so far in 2026, and while it’s just a small sample, it was Myers’ best pitch in 2025 as well. He has yet to utilize his change-up this season, which is an interesting development considering he’s been effective early on with pitches of similar speeds. That’s likely by design at this point, but it will be worth watching if he incorporates an improved version of that pitch as the season goes along.
This is the type of pitcher and staff saver the Mets have not had really since Darren Oliver twenty years ago, and it’s important that we appreciate what he’s been able to bring. Both David Stearns and Carlos Mendoza have spoken very highly of Myers since the day he was acquired along with Peralta earlier this year, and so far, the hype has been worth it.
Around the League 🚩
Michael Wacha allowed just a run on three hits in seven terrific innings while leading the Royals to a 4-2 win in Cleveland
Cedric Mullins hit his first home run of the season in the Rays 6-4 win over the Cubs
Nick Castellanos had two hits and drove in a run in the Padres 5-0 win over the Pirates
Brady House doubled twice, homered, and drove in a pair in the Nationals 9-6 home victory over the Cardinals

Darren Oliver? How about Trevor Williams. For almost 3 years the guy was invaluable for the Mets and if recollection serves me right it was more recent than 20 years ago. The question I have is with Soto hitting the IL why is Mauricio being called up? He’s not an outfielder and they certainly don’t need another DH or SS or infielder. This is a waste of his last option and unless he stays and Young goes back where are his at bats? They should have brought up MJ or Pache. Vientos certainly isn’t sitting and Baty needs to play as much as possible too. The moves this team makes sometimes. I swear.
"...it’s preferable if the Mets were to give him a start over Sean Manaea right now, even if it’s only for 3-4 innings." I couldn't disagree more. Myers is much too valuable in his current role to be used as a spot starter and Manaea's decline has been exaggerated imo. I also wish the article had mentioned that we're carrying two ineffective relievers on the team (Garcia and Lovelady). And I do wish someone would explain why the Mets had all winter to find relief help and couldn't do better than Garcia and Lovelady. I'd also like an explanation of why it's apparently forbidden for Weaver to go more than one inning.
