The Killer B's! Mets record biggest extra inning in club history
Some important players on this team acted like it on Monday night in another key comeback win
What’s Up with the Mets? ⚾️
The Mets explode for ten runs in the 12th inning to stay hot and take the series opener in D.C. (box)
Bo Bichette and Brett Baty each homered and drove in three runs
Carson Benge had three hits and three RBI out of the leadoff spot
RHP Christian Scott started for the Mets and gave up three runs on four hits and three walks while striking out five in four innings
RHP Huascar Brazoban earned the win and did some serious heavy lifting in extra innings, getting the Mets out of the 10th and 11th to set-up the 12th inning heroics
The ten runs the Mets scored in the 12th was easily their most ever in an extra inning—the previous high had been six. The Mets became the first National League team in more than a century to score 10 runs in an extra inning. It was the most runs scored in an extra inning in the major leagues since the Rangers dropped 12 in the 15th inning on July 5, 1983
Left-handed pitching prospect Zach Thornton will be promoted to make his MLB debut on Wednesday, either as a starter or behind an opener
Injury Updates 🏥
RHP Kodai Senga (lumbar spine inflammation) threw three innings and 46 pitches of live BP on Sunday with his velocity touching 96
INF Jorge Polanco (achilles bursitis) could go on a rehab assignment this week if he can tolerate the pain
LHP AJ Minter (recovery from lat surgery, hip discomfort) resumed his rehab assignment last week - he will not require the full 30 days to return, assuming there are no new setbacks
OF Jared Young (torn meniscus) is on rehab assignment now - his assignment could be transferred to a higher level soon
Play of the Game ✨
All of the runs the Mets scored in the top of the 12th are obviously going to garner most of the attention from this one—and for good reason. But the play of this game came two innings earlier.
With the bases loaded and two outs in a tie game in the 10th, Huascar Brazoban had to face the Nationals’ clean-up hitter, C.J. Abrams, with the game on the line. Brazoban had never retired Abrams in three career match-ups, but this time he was able to strike him out to push this game to the 11th.

The Mets killer B’s were the story of the night in D.C ✍🏻
The story of the first month and a half of the Mets season has been underperformance by key players who came into the year with lofty expectations. Too many nights the Mets offense was noncompetitive, uninspired, and frankly frustrating to watch. But the worm has begun to turn over the past week, and after an inspiring series finale against the Yankees, the Mets secured another hard-fought, exciting win in the opener of the road trip on Monday.
And as a fun coincidence, most of the players who made the biggest difference on Monday share the same last initial. Let’s take a look at the guys who led the charge.
Bo Bichette
On the day Ken Rosenthal of the Athletic published a deep dive on Bichette’s struggles to adapt to New York—both physically and mentally—the veteran delivered arguably his most complete game in the orange and blue.
Bichette contributed three hits and was on base four times during New York’s 12-inning marathon victory. He finished a triple shy of the cycle, drove in three runs, and produced another productive out by moving the free runner, Carson Benge, to third base in the 10th inning.
He again started at shortstop but moved back to third base late in the game, and all in all, this was a tight, clean, and dynamic game from a player the Mets simply need to play like a superstar.
Brett Baty
The Mets had lofty expectations for Baty coming into this season following his big second half in 2025, but he struggled mightily for most of the first month. That’s changed dramatically of late, and Monday was just the latest installment of his renaissance. Leading off the 4th inning, Baty crushed a titanic blast to deep center field, and in extra innings, he added a two-run single. He finished with three RBI, but his contributions were not limited to offense.
In the 11th inning, after moving from third base to first base, Baty twice made enormous plays with the glove. First, he picked an off-balance throw from Huascar Brazoban on a comebacker that had trouble written all over it. Two batters later, he fielded a groundball and made a gutsy decision to throw to second base for a critical force out. His throw narrowly missed hitting the runner, Joey Wiemer, in the back, and barely beat Wiemer to the bag. Had he not made that decision, however, the Mets would have lost when the next National hitter, Jorbit Vivas, doubled into the gap.
Carson Benge
The Mets’ exciting rookie has clearly been getting steadily more comfortable at the Major League level, and it has been fun to watch his confidence grow.
He’s found a home and settled into the leadoff role for this Mets lineup, and every day he seemingly comes up with new heroics. On Monday, Benge was on base four times with three hits and a walk. He drove in three runs, scored three runs, and handled everything in right field with ease..
Huascar Brazoban
Brazoban is for all intents and purposes the biggest reason the Mets were able to win the ballgame last night. After the Mets failed to score in the top of the 10th, he was summoned to try to prolong the game. The Nationals immediately dropped down a sac bunt to push the winning run to third base. Brazoban walked the bases loaded to set up a force everywhere, got a 3-2 fielder’s choice out at the plate, and then struck out C.J. Abrams to send the game to the 11th.
The following inning he had to do more heavy lifting, this time stranding two runners in scoring position to get the game to the 12th inning where the Mets would explode for 10 runs.
Vidal Brujan
Brujan’s contributions don’t jump out of the box score the way some of the other guys on this list do, but let’s not discount what was easily his most productive game since being promoted.
He first entered this game as a pinch-runner for the free runner (Mark Vientos) in the top of the 11th. Brujan used his wheels to score on a sacrifice fly from Marcus Semien during that inning, and after staying in the game at shortstop in the bottom of the frame, made a nice play on a two-out slow roller from Drew Millas to get the game to the 12th. We all know now what ultimately happened in that 12th inning, but long before it got out of hand, Brujan dropped down a beautiful bases-loaded bunt for a hit to keep the line moving.
—
All told, what a win again for the Mets. They were on the brink of going back to their hotel in disappointing fashion, but as Mike wrote on Monday morning, there seems to be some character building going on with the Mets right now. All six of their latest wins have been come-from-behind, and that resiliency is notable considering how poor they were in that regard in 2025.
That aspect of the club contributed to their nosedive last year, while that aspect of the club is suddenly contributing to their ascent, hopefully back into both relevance and contention.
Around the League 🚩
Jose Ramirez contributed three hits—including a home run—and drove in three in the Guardians 8-2 win over the Tigers
Yandy Diaz and Junior Caminero each collected four RBI in Tampa’s 16-6 drubbing of the Orioles
Bryson Stott homered in the 8th to flip the game and lead the Phillies to a 5-4 win over the Reds
Xavier Edwards and Javier Sanoja both homered in the Marlins 12-0 banking of Atlanta
Sonny Gray struck out nine in six excellent innings to lead the Red Sox to a 5-1 win in Kansas City

I am not yet convinced they are a contender but they are way more fun to watch with the young players injecting massive life into a walking-dead team. Zach Thorton being the 4th rookie to play for them when he pitches on Wednesday is a refreshing change. It's even a little Dodger-like - because it's working!
"Mets call up Nick Morabito & cut Austin Slater
The 23-year-old outfielder is set to make his major league debut in Washington after a strong start in Triple-A. He joins a youth movement in New York as the team moves or from veteran depth to prioritize speed and upside."
