As for Stearns, my bar was low for his postmortem and he exceeded it. BLOT: Open contrition instead of blind hubris was warranted and evident. And in the spirit of “burying the hatchet,” I will retire my drinking game of having a beer every time I hear “run prevention.” It’s been called “Defense” since the days of Doubleday (the original, not our guy…). Good first steps.
Now I (we) wait. Personally, I’m going to enjoy the Post without the anxiety of having “a dog in the fight.” Just great baseball appreciated by a lifelong fan. I’ll also do my best to ignore the anvil hanging over all our heads (the unsettled business side of things). Not the Mets needing to wheel and deal, but the pending lockout.
No, retaining Stearns is not the right call. Success is more important than "demonstrating stability". Keeping Stearns is rewarding failure. The best thing to come out of his presser is basically demoting Semien. And getting rid of that "run prevention" drivel.
Still do not have the confidence in Sterns to make good baseball decisions for this team. He seemed to hint already at a combination of Baty and someone else at 1B. I do like Baty but as a utility player not at a premium position. They need to have Andy Green have a say in this team. He recognizes real ballplayers with that feel and passion for the game. It would be great to see if someone can get through to Soto to hustle down to first base and shown some leadership for these young guys. Great job, Michael, you should be in the front office! We need some good common sense when making decisions!
Both Alvarez and Baty are guys with talent who have gotten lots of opportunity but not come through. There comes a time when you have to conclude that a player is not going to be what you hoped he would be. It may be that time.
