Mets finish sweep of Toronto thanks to great pitching, just enough offense
And could the 2025 season be Pete Alonso's finest act?
What’s up with the Mets? ⚾
The Mets completed a sweep of the Blue Jays in the opening series of the year at Citi Field, topping Toronto 2-1 on Sunday (box | highlights)
LHP David Peterson started for the Mets but was dealing with nausea and blurred vision on the mound which caused him to exit after just 4.2 innings, in which surrendered a run on three hits
Max Kranick, Reed Garrett, A.J. Minter, and Edwin Diaz combined to fire 4.1 innings of scoreless ball in relief
Pete Alonso contributed two more hits and drove in his team leading 11th run. He is one of 11 players in Mets history to record at least 11 RBI through the team’s first nine games of a season. He is the only player in franchise history to do so multiple times (2019, 2022, 2025).
Injury Updates 🏥
Luis Torrens once again did not start the game on Sunday because of a bruised forearm, but he is expected back in the lineup potentially as early as tonight

A motivated Pete Alonso is poised for a career year in 2025✍️
When Pete Alonso’s free agency was dragging deeper and deeper into the winter, one common theme prevailed throughout. The Mets wanted him back and knew they were a better team with him at first base.
That last part has been abundantly clear during the first week and a half of the 2025 season.
Nestled comfortably at third in the Mets batting order behind Francisco Lindor and Juan Soto, the Polar Bear has been New York’s most dominant hitter through the season’s first three series.
In 31 at-bats so far, Alonso is slashing .290/.421/.645 with a fantastic 1.066 OPS. He’s connected on three home runs, has collected a team-high 11 RBIs, and has displayed a clutch gene and flair for the dramatic that was absent for most of the 2024 regular season.
Alonso’s game-tying three-run blast in the 8th inning of the Mets rubber game with the Marlins last week was the catalyst behind the Amazons’ first signature win of 2025. And he made his presence felt all weekend against the Blue Jays.
His opposite-field home run in the 1st inning of the home opener on Friday immediately sent the Citi crowd into a frenzy and provided a jolt of momentum the Mets carried throughout the series.
Yesterday, Alonso collected two hits and was on base three times, while driving in his team-leading 11th run.
In Francisco Lindor and Juan Soto, the Mets have about as dynamic a 1-2 punch atop their lineup as any team in baseball, but for as good as that pair is, Alonso is arguably the key to the Mets’ success.
The way he has consistently made the opposition pay for being careful against Soto is eventually going to give pitchers pause and afford Soto more opportunities to do damage himself.
And in the meantime, Alonso is well-positioned to deliver a monumental RBI total this season, as he’s constantly been coming to the plate with men on base.
Alonso already has three seasons with 100+ RBIs under his belt, with his 2022 total of 131 currently his career high. Don’t be surprised if that gets threatened this season.
We all know Alonso’s first foray into the free-agent market did not go as planned, and his struggles during a contract year in 2024 came at an inopportune time. But hitting in a line-up that includes a pair of players on track for Cooperstown, combined with the internal motivation to secure a more lucrative long-term contract next winter, certainly looks to have brought a different Alonso to the forefront.
Alonso’s home runs have been especially telling, as he’s really focused on driving the ball up the middle and the other way, which has helped him be a more dangerous all-around offensive threat.
It’s only nine games, so the sample size is understandably small, but Alonso’s at-bats have looked determined, poised, and dangerous from the jump here in 2025.
He’s closing in on becoming the Mets all-time home run king, and if he can keep this level of production up throughout the season, he’s going to make himself a lot of money in a few months.

Nick Castellanos crushed a grand slam in the Phillies 8-7 slugfest win over the Dodgers

Bobby Witt Jr. had three hits including his first triple of the season in Kansas City’s 4-3 home win over Baltimore
To be sure, Alonzo looks more relaxed this year as pressure seems off of him...and his plate discipline has improved. Maybe better by learning from Soto??
Don't we root for the Amazins not the Amazons? 🤣
