The Mets suffered a significant injury blow during Thursday’s game when Kodai Senga left his start in the sixth inning after suffering a strained right hamstring.
Mets manager Carlos Mendoza said after the Mets 4-3 win over the Nationals that Senga will have an MRI tomorrow and will definitely be placed on the injured list ahead of tomorrow night’s game against the Rays.
Senga told Mendoza he felt the hamstring give on the step before he had to jump for an errant throw from Pete Alonso while covering first base in the sixth inning.
Mendoza would not confirm who will replace Senga in the rotation during his absence, although Paul Blackburn seems to be the obvious choice at least in the immediate term. The Mets will have both Sean Manaea and Frankie Montas returning to the rotation in the coming weeks, and can perhaps consider Brandon Sproat or Blade Tidwell down the line as well.
Senga was off to a brilliant start to his season before suffering his latest lower body injury, going 6-3 with a 1.59 ERA in 68 innings over 12 starts to begin his 2025 season. He missed all but one start in 2024 due to a shoulder injury he sustained during spring training last year and a calf injury in his first and only regular season start last summer.
He's good at scooping balls in the dirt...Pete, practice your throws for another few hours, please! I guess things were going too well, something had to happen. So long as one of the big 3 don't go down. Sure am glad Blackburn's ready with Manea on the horizon.
You can blame Pete for a bad throw, he really is terrible throwing to 1st, but Senga is injury prone. that was his reputation when he came over. It's just something we have to live with
That was not that bad of a throw. You've got a speedy runner in Abrams, Alonzo is leading the pitcher to the bag. That shouldn't cause an injury of that nature.
Forcing the pitcher to leap for the ball while trying to make contact with the base when landing makes it a terrible throw. And that Senga says, truthfully or not, he felt the twitch before he jumped doesn't change that.
Didn't he have the same injury last year
Believe it was calf last year.
Pete is brutal at first base , cannot make a simple throw. That’s
Part of being a ball player, now down one of our B best pitchers
Alonzo will get ALL our pitchers hurt with his erratic throws. Unacceptable

Tough break. He has been terrific, will be missed, but next man up! Hopefully he won't be gone for an extended period of time

Sad for him but he won’t be missed with our depth
This is a bad take
I'd say so. Leads the league in ERA..."won't be missed"?!?
