A proven second baseman with a solid bat. We need some LEADERSHIP in the locker room and on the field. And we do not need DAVID STERNS.
What exactly does the front office think all these mid-level prospects are going to do for the 2027 Mets? The odds are that most of these so-called prospects will never become productive major leaguers. I notice there aren't any top-10 prospects in these deals—just organizational depth and lottery tickets.
Who's left to build around next year? Polanco? Baty? Vientos? That's not the core of a contender.
If Steve Cohen wants this team competing next season, he'll have to do what only he can do: open the checkbook for proven major leaguers—not another wave of "potential." The Mets don't need more players who might develop someday. They need legitimate hitters who can bat .275, get on base, and produce immediately. Otherwise, 2027 could look a lot like 2026.
They had a prime chance to win and blew it. The start does underline why I want to see people like that the rest of the way instead of the likes of Robert, Semien, Polanco, or, TBH, Baty and Vientos. Senga, too. Whatever the Padres want, if they are serious, give it to them.
(I can see some team thinking he is a low-risk option. The Cubs received some value from Peterson, who is mostly forgotten.)
Taylor is a small thing, but there is no good reason not to trade him. You won't get much back. Some low-level prospect, let's say. But he's completely disposable. They have extra OFs (they use people like Baty -- who cares?), including in the minors.
And, yes, I wish the trade deadline was July 31 or August 1. Get it over with.
Allowing Weaver & Holmes to escape will be catastrophic. Every single transaction the GM made was disastrous. Its almost as if the Mets only had an Eighteen man roster. The additions provided ZERO benefits. Bichette was good though. I have this feeling players don't view the Mets as a Top 5 desirable locale. Our top reliever fleeing to Dodgers was a red flag.
I think Bichette was supposed to bring back the offense lost by tradiing Alonso. People regularly reference Polanco. But I think he was meant as a short-term option at 1st, while Bichette was supposed to give you offense.
I checked Baseball Reference. B repeatedly had a high WAR. Now, it is a fraction of 1. Sigh.
The argument for trading Weaver can also be made for any good player that the team controls beyond this year: it helps replenish the farm. If that's the rationale, why not trade Alvarez and Torrens as well? That would be a bad idea, as is trading Weaver, unless you get a great return from a desperate team. Since Brazoban is under control through '29, I don't think the Mets got such a great return. Sure, he's inconsistent, but who is going to help the Mets more in '27, Brazoban or the prospect they got who's been getting beaten up in AAA? Remember, this team is supposed to contend in '27, isn't that the hope?
