In this era of 5-inning starters, is it possible Manaea says in the rotation for 18 batters and there is a "designated bulk reliever" on the days he starts? An ERA under 4 for the opening of the game is acceptable for a fifth starter.
Off-subject: Looks like Baty is giving us another tease, as in "this is the real Baty". He's been such a weak hitter for so long and he's had ample opportunity. I'm ready to move on.
Fans that watch the team every day will not disagree with your assessment of Manaea nor do I. But I bet there are many that are frustrated that next season Manaea will likely be a $25M long reliever and leverage left hander. Inflation.
The cost is what it is, bad investment or not. If they must live with him another year, it will need to be as a 4-5 inning relief guy. I’m not much into 5 inning openers since it requires expending two pitchers for a day and unavailable for days afterward. Most teams in today’s sad pitching reality can’t sustain that. If they could find a way, of course, that would be ideal. Would require not having to use a boatload of relievers every day.
Anyway. I agree with TG that someone who can give you around five innings is a credible fifth or sixth starter. He can also regularly toss 2+ innings in a game when necessary. In effect, he can be your swing/long guy.
The Mets have three guys who are likely part of the starting rotation. There are various options for the fifth spot, including someone like Tong. Sean might be in the mix. Plus, teams these days always need extra starters.
Toss in a quality free agent — I don’t need Skrubal — and it’s a play-off caliber rotation.
I agree with this analysis of Manaea. He may be better as a 1 or 2 inning reliever with added value as a mentor for the younger pitchers. If he does well maybe he can net a prospect in a trade at next year’s trade deadline. Otherwise, he can walk at the end of his contract.
Being that I was oh so very wrong about Pete Alonzo....and I am embarrassed about my criticisms of his fielding, baserunning & his penchant for.chasing the outside pitch, I had no idea the club would Butcher the 1st base situation as they've done. They'd be 500 WITH Alonso. I ALWAYS was impressed how he'd stretch to catch ball before runners toe hit the bag....how many games did that save??? So my judgement of talent sucks.....I'd let Shaun battle for a spot next year but he's almost.done in the Bigs. Why did we trade Pete-Crow Armstrong????

Spot on. That is what it looks like to me as well.
In my opinion long relief or spot starter unless he irons out his problems before training camp. With his salary, not going anywhere
Sean had a nice year and was overpaid.

It's amazing that the Yankees got 2 guys in their 30s...Bellinger & Goldschmidt that are producing tremendously. Good scouting.
The Mets should go after Sandy Alcantara....hes an innings machine.
