One starting pitcher and either Bellinger or Tucker and they have a decent team.

I'll take Tucker. Plug him in a corner outfield spot and then we just need a right-handed or switch-hitting bat in center.

There just isn't a lot out there right now. Ketel Marte, maybe. But he hasn't played center on a regular basis since 2021, and it would cost significant prospect capital.

Same with pitching. There isn't much out there now that King has stayed in San Diego.

I'd pass on Valdez, but definitely say hello to Freddy Peralta. But that's another passel of prospects out the door. I'm not sure Stearns wants to spend the future, especially with a lockout looming (that's a bigger factor than maybe we realize).

We're likely in on Imai, maybe talking to Zac Gallen too. But we're not going to spend big this cycle.

I'd be deliriously happy if they sign Tucker. Boom, that an entirely different team!

It changes the picture dramatically, doesn't it? Suddenly we're looking a LOT better.

Ah, another year of "if everything goes right, it might be okay."

Not sure I understand. Every season there's guys who perform worse than expected, others better than expected, and some as expected. Some years more injuries, some less. How many teams are locks?

The entry discussed how it had been a long time since they won it all or had a long run of quality. Year after year, we have hopes. If things go right, they will be "decent." It doesn't have to be a lock. Multiple teams have extended periods of decent teams or better. The Mets continuously do not.

Well, McLain could easily add another 2-3 WAR, so you'd just need 4-5 more. Adding Eugenio Suarez could give you 3-4 more and Alvarez, Benge, Baty, Williams some more. Then add one decent starting pitcher, such as Ranger Suarez, and we're in the playoffs! Yay!

John Taylor's avatar

Is that the baseline 2-3 WAR of a typical starter, or 2-3 above that, which would make him an All-Star?

Steve1962's avatar

In 8 starts, McLean accumulated 1.8 WAR. Let's say he only starts 24 times; he could get another 3 WAR . I'd say he could equal Ranger Suarez' s 2025 season (4.7 WAR). Am I way off?

Optimism is neither a plan or a solution ~ Anonymous

The Opening Day lineup will likely have a new to the roster LF and CF. It already has a new to the roster 1B and 2B. I've lost count and have no idea how many new arms will on the roster.

One half the position players and a still undetermined number of the pitching staff spells rebuild to me.

I didn't expect to have zero titles and this amount of roster turmoil after five years of the Steve Cohen ownership. No title I can accept if there is stability and the hunt is on for a player or two to complement an existing roster ... but not what we have now. I am greatly disappointed. I think I have been patient and have been walked down the garden path ... again.

I grew up in Brooklyn as a Dodger fan. I did not switch to the Yankees when they left for the West Coast, but remained a Dodger fan until the Mets came into existence. The future after all this time is 2026 to me ... not 2028,not 2029. I'm thinking of a reconciliation with the Dodgers.

Too early to give up. Let's see what Stearns has up his sleeve.

Fire sale. They wont win 70 games next year.

The Mets are an NY team, so there is a feeling that they can not be completely rebuilt. So they will always spend some money, short-term it might be. Plus they have those two big parts -- some other team would trade Lindor, too.

I feel like this off season will be covered in a future book. What type of book we don't know yet.

Shouldn't Montas be a negative fWAR? I'm kidding! Sorta...
