BREAKING: Mets to call up Brandon Sproat, will pitch Sunday
The Mets are calling up another highly touted pitching prospect as their rotation continues to falter
The Mets are injecting more youth into their drive for the playoffs in 2025.
According to multiple reports, the Mets will be selecting the contract of RHP Brandon Sproat from Triple-A Syracuse and have him start on Sunday in place of RHP Kodai Senga.
Sproat, 24, has gone 8-6 with a 4.24 ERA with 113 strikeouts and 53 walks over 121 innings, spanning 26 appearances and 25 starts in 2025. He has had a topsy-turvy season in the minors as he has seen the likes of both Nolan McLean and Jonah Tong leapfrog him to the major leagues, but has proven to be one of the best pitchers at Triple-A for the bulk of the season, pitching to a 3.17 ERA with 86 strikeouts and 36 walks over his last 17 appearances, a span of 84.2 IP. During that time, he has held opponents to just a .602 OPS with just five home runs allowed. He is ranked as the club’s fifth-best prospect according to MLB.com.
In his most recent start for Triple-A Syracuse, Sproat allowed just three hits with nine strikeouts over seven innings against Triple-A Scranton Wilkes-Barre, the Yankees’ top minor league affiliate.
The move to promote Sproat doesn’t really come as a surprise as the Mets are seeking consistency and reliability in the wake of the struggles from Senga, Sean Manaea, and recently David Peterson. The Mets are hopeful the trio of McLean, Tong, and Sproat can provide more stability even as the club heavily leans on youth and inexperience to carry them to the postseason.
Mets manager Carlos Mendoza had been noncommittal recently as far as whether or not Senga would make his next start, which was slated to be on Sunday against the Reds, who enter play today five games behind the Mets for the final wild card spot in the National League.
Now, Senga’s future has become more uncertain. The club has reportedly entertained asking Senga to accept a minor league assignment so he can work his issues out away from the team and the pennant race.
For now, the Mets will throw Peterson tomorrow, followed by Tong on Saturday, and Sproat on Sunday. McLean would likely follow against the Phillies on Monday, and then Clay Holmes on Tuesday. Peterson and Tong’s spot in the rotation would follow to conclude their series in Philadelphia, assuming the Mets stay the course and stick with a five-man rotation through next Thursday.
About time. Now send Senga down or DL for a leg issue - he is not driving off his leg properly since his calf injury this summer.
Excited to see Sproat. I don’t think he’ll be as good as McLean or Tong. I think his issues are similar to Christian Scott’s where he struggles against lefties. .750 OPS against lefties in AAA isn’t great. But he cannot be worse than Senga or Manaea. It’s the right move imo.
