Mets acquire Tyler Rogers from the Giants
The Mets paid a hefty price for a rental in Rogers, who was having a stellar season for the Giants
The Mets made a bold move to upgrade their bullpen on Wednesday, albeit with a steep price attached.
According to FanSided, the Mets are acquiring RHP Tyler Rogers from the Giants in exchange for RHP’s José Buttó and Blade Tidwell along with minor league OF Drew Gilbert.
Rogers, who can be a free agent at the end of the 2025 season, is a submarine pitcher who has pitched to a 1.80 ERA in a league-leading 53 appearances over 50 innings in 2025, issuing just four walks against 38 strikeouts so far this season, a 9.5:1 strikeout-to-walk ratio. He has led the league in appearances in three of his first seven seasons in the major leagues and is holding opponents to just a .522 OPS this year.
The acquisition of Rogers does not come without a steep return going back to the Giants in what is once again a sellers market this summer. The Mets had to surrender two top-15 prospects in Tidwell (10) and Gilbert (12) plus Buttó, the latter of which was a key part of the Mets success in 2024 but has regressed to a 3.64 ERA and seen his strikeout rate diminish by nearly two per nine innings in 2025.
The Mets acquired Gilbert in the trade that sent Justin Verlander to the Astros at the trade deadline in 2023. Gilbert had an .785 OPS for Triple-A Syracuse with 12 home runs and 46 RBI in 81 games this season.
As for Tidwell, he has gotten cups of coffee with the Mets this season, allowing 23 hits and 15 earned runs over 15 innings with the Mets in four appearances and two starts this season. He has spent the majority of the season with Triple-A Syracuse, pitching to a 4.10 ERA over 17 appearances and 14 starts.
Despite the hefty price tag, the Mets bullpen has been significantly upgraded by the acquisition of Rogers and Gregory Soto in the last week. Rogers should be especially useful against right-handed hitters as he has held them to just a .505 OPS this season thanks to his deceptive delivery.
Kinda steep for a rental. I read somewhere recently that Gilbert was raking and could be in the mix for CF next year. It's not like the Mets trade away CFers that turn into All-Stars
Remarkable that stearns would pay this price for a rental. If they had him through 2026, I could see it. Looks like the slogan is "go all out to win this year" . Trying to make myself feel better because Jett and Benge are coming up.
