If the Tigers and Padres were average or bad teams, it would be reasonable to think you can pry away their best player. But they're contenders, so it's not reasonable to spill ink about Skubal or Tatis. Let's distinguish between what we'd like and what's possible. Put another way, are Toronto-based pundits writing about getting Soto or Lindor from the Mets in a trade? Far as I know, the "Padres for sale, new ownership will cut payroll" mantra is crafted from dust.

In other words ... the Mets are a mess and are going to need some serious GMing type work to get on track with a balanced, talented roster for 2026

Seems the Mets are kicking the tires on every and any player who might be available to them. To me Tatis is the best of them all. He’s still a kid who already has been caught cheating but I think that might be a good thing as he should have learned now that he can’t get caught again or a lot of the contract would be pissed away. He’s an electric player and if family genes mean anything his old man played for a long time and was productive into and through his 30’s. Didn’t he play for close to 20 years in the majors? I think the contract ages well in that sense. Of course that doesn’t really matter but maybe he wishes to do that himself. Hunter Greene would be a boon and probably cost less than Skubal. The kid really turned a corner this past season and should be take that next step? He would be just as good as any starter out there now. Skenes included. All this speculation is fun to talk about but what I want to hear is Pete and Diaz get signed and are coming back.

It's really tough to see San Diego letting Tatis go. They're in the hunt out there.

I don't like a potential Schwarber signing, either. By all appearances he's a great guy, and he can hit the ball a country mile on the regular. But man, those strikeouts ... YIKES.

Pass on Robert and Buxton, too.

But "Fastball" Freddie Peralta? Now there's a name we should be interested in. Look at his last three seasons and imagine that plugged into our rotation. Peralta at No. 1 changes the picture entirely.

The question is: are there any players, at any position, that the Mets aren't interested in? 😅
