Say it again: "Considering the owner and the amount invested in this roster, it would seem totally absurd for the Mets to go to camp without making at least one significant position player addition. It would also seem totally absurd if they went to camp with this projected lineup configuration and absolutely no protection whatsoever for Soto, who could conceivably draw 200 walks under the current configuration and take the bat out of his hands in almost every other at-bat. Not to mention the rotation, the area of the team that actually sunk the Mets in 2025 and has remained untouched to-date." Absolutely. What scares me is that while it would be totally loony not to get a star position player or a bigtime starter before this season starts, is there anybody out there who would've believed they would both let Alonso go and let Diaz slip through their hands? And let's not forget that center field is a big problem that's getting overshadowed by the gaping crater in left field. You can argue that a Benge/Taylor combo is adequate but that's not so clear. Plenty of prospects as shiny as Benge have not turned out. I'm desperate for something to cheer about. Tired of checking sportspyder and MLBTR 15 times a day.
It's tough to get too excited about anyone out there this cycle. Tucker is a decent fit, but not at the kind of numbers he's rumored to be looking for. A contract bigger than Bregman's would be an overpay over an overpay.
For his part, Bellinger was said to be looking for Aaron Judge money from the Yankees. That's just nuts. If we're talking to him, I hope the conversation is taking place on Planet Earth.
Who else fits? Bo Bichette is a nice stick and would check a lot of boxes, but where does he play? Could he convert to left field? Is it worth the gamble?
I'd be surprised if that conversation isn't happening in the front office. But I'd be equally surprised if that were the solution we landed on.
After that, the deals all seem to be on the margins: good players, but no one who is going to be an upgrade in left over Nimmo.
If they don't sign tucker or bellinger, I'd say no to the mediocrities like bader or Hays. Play the prospects and call it a rebuild. More like a big fat waste of a year of Soto's prime and what's left of Lindor's prime.
That last line is why I believe Stearns is working the phones. He knows the situation.
If someone like Tatis were a free agent, he'd be all in. If there was a deal to be had to bring him over, he'd be all in on that, too. He would have put together a package for Ketel Marte if Arizona was ready to dance.
But in a market where the big names are Tucker, Bellinger and Framber Valdez, he's elected to keep his powder dry (for now). And he can afford to. He has plenty of both prospect capital and available cash to make a move at any time.
I'm positive he's just being careful to not squander it.

They were never signing Alonso, and I think they meant to hold onto Diaz but he wanted to jump ship
At this point in Bellinger’s career, he is a good LF’er but is Jeff McNeil at the other positions.
Maybe but somewhere I've read that he's quite good at first. Either way, he's far less valuable than Tucker offensively.
Mets wont win more than 60 games in 2026. But you can go next door and see Cohen's shiny new slot machines if you want.
