Santander is not gonna be worth his ask. Sub-par fielder who is a DH at this point. And he doesn’t walk much. Signing Pete is probably the move. Add additional depth and raise the floor at every position including the bench.

I think you're right. Losing a draft pick won't be an impediment to signing Bregman. If the math works, I can see Stearns pulling the trigger if Pete has in fact priced himself out.

Well, what I am referring to is not one or the other. It's both here. We will see of course, but if they were willing to sign Hernandez and Alonso, it's logical to conclude they'd be willing to sign Bregman and Alonso if the contract lengths are right.

Right, I got that. I'm not sure Bregman would come in on the same terms as Hernandez, at least on AAV, but assuming it's in the same neighborhood, it's possible to get him and Pete at the same time. The years would definitely be the issue.

I'm just thinking out loud a little. If Pete really is looking for, say, $200 million, I think Stearns and Cohen would pass and sign Bregman instead. They won't mind giving up the pick.

To be honest though, I'm also having a hard time seeing us lock in two corner infielders to big money contracts at 30+ years of age. I'm not saying we can't (or won't) do it. But looking at the way Stearns usually operates, it doesn't strike me as the most likely outcome.
