Correct me if I'm wrong, but Madrigal's contract was a split contract, meanin he'd get paid for wherever he played (MLB salary vs. Minor League salary). Iglesias cannot be offered that deal in that he has no options remaining and if he were to be sent down, the Mets would have to DFA him, first. I don't want to get into a long discussion about roster manipulation, depth chart issues, the value of a young prospect being at the major league level (and playing, sparingly) versus playing in Triple-A (and only learning to hit subpar pitching), but I just think the Mets need to know what these younger players are like.
Disagree. Let the kids play. I'm not sure why Baty isn't in your conversation. It may be true that having Acuna playing "sparingly" is not ideal, but lotsa stuff is "not ideal"! Btw, no reason 2b can't be a soft platoon with McNeil.
Signing Iglesias should be a no brainer. Even if he doesn't have another career year like in 2024, he's a solid player—good hitter, terrific infielder, great teammate. I don't see why Stearns doesn't realize this. Just sign him.
Now that Manea is also injured, (at the risk of sounding like a broken record) can I repeat that given how much dough was invested in Soto, it was inconsistent and not smart to not go after Fried, Snell, Burnes? We may end up losing a lot of games 8-6.
Here's a nice take from Steve Adams at MLBTR today: "On the other, the Mets quite arguably didn’t do enough with their rotation this winter in the first place. Senga pitched in one game last year due to injuries. Montas’ 2023 was wiped out by shoulder surgery, and he posted a 4.84 ERA over 150 innings in last year’s return. Holmes is converting to the rotation after six years pitching exclusively as a reliever. Canning was non-tendered and has a 4.96 ERA over his past three seasons. Blackburn is a fourth/fifth starter who was limited to 75 innings by a spinal injury last year. The rotation lacks certainty even when it’s at full strength — and the Mets are a ways off from full strength as things stand."
There is no question that Jose was a terrific addition on the field and in the clubhouse. Since he is still sitting out there and if he agreed to the conditions needed for the Mets to pull the trigger, I'd do it. He is a reliable infielder that can play 2B, SS, or 3B adequately
Iglesias signed a minor league deal last season. If he’d take a split deal like Madrigal then it would make sense. Otherwise I’d rather keep the roster flexibility for the young guys

I think Madrigal has minor league options. Stearns likes flexibility. Iglesias better, no options.

OMG part 2 makes so much more sense than Madrigal since Jose can actually hit.
