Failing to make the playoffs would be an all-time disappointment for this franchise. And Wednesday's loss was more of the same and provided no evidence the Mets can turn this around.
There were two occurrences where I felt Baty makes the play at third if he's there. With how the defense has played lately, he has to be in there instead of Vientos.
apparently not, right? I feel for Mendy because his starting pitching staff has really let him down this year. Can't blame Tong for his troubles, he's trying but he got out of that first inning with help from Taylor and he needed help from his third baseman there in the 3rd and didn't get it.
MENDOZA has to go . Tong / Torrens did excellent together . Why to change ?? Why to have a Rookie 22 yrs Pitcher with a Catcher like Alvarez who has NO VALUE to the pitching staff. Alvarez is good at bats BUT good high IQ Catchers ADD value to the Pitching staff and help in RUN PREVENTION. MENDOZA does not how to approach the game . Sorry guys but we have a VERY STRONG TEAM with a VERY WEAK LOW IQ MANAGER
1. Thank you Luis - I have been saying ing these things almost all season and think my words are going into the wind
2. Vientos!!! - Mendoza puts him in this whole series bc of lefty/righty matchups -as if that has meant anything to Vientos. Trade him this winter. Vientos is not hitting, very poor defense, can’t run well even if he gets on base. Baty gives us a better bat and better defense - Mandoza in frozen crap with his decisions!
3. Alonso thinks he did enough all season to get his “big contract” let him go - he should only be signed w Mets at a fair price - not worth more - we don’t need a Kingman HR hitter on the team - give me a first baseman with better defense, and contact hitter
He stays only if he doesn’t try to break the bank w a massive contract. We have deeper needs that will be expensive and a Dave Kingman we don’t need to win
I'm a big Soto fan. He's expanded his game this year with the stolen bases even though he doesn't have blazing speed. Maybe he can improve in the field, he's still young.
Oh I get by with a little help from my friends! Hoping for a big outing from our Ace, and a beating by the Pirates and Dodgers to tighten the noose on the Reds and DBacks. Could be a big day!
I can't argue or add to anything you wrote, but I can still vent! There may have been more devastating collapses in Mets history but this squad has to be a finalist for the most disappointing team.
The entire organization shares this disappointment: the flawed roster, the C-level dugout management, and the coaches who have failed to make a difference.
I won't throw Cohen under the bus but clearly the team is behind the plan he had four years ago.
But the game is played by the players and this bunch never quite gelled into a force. I suppose we'll learn more from the writers when the coast is clear but something stinks in Denmark with these guys.
We're fans so we'll continue to hang on to whatever shreds of legitimacy that we can, but the end is near.
"(T)he game is played by the players and this bunch never quite gelled into a force."
This is the key for me. The injuries to our pitching cost us the season (I'd argue it's amazing we are where we are, considering) but there's nothing to be done about that. Players get hurt, and there are only so many realistic options for compensating.
I actually give Stearns credit for going through the phone book every day to find arms rather than blame him for not making a deadline deal which simply wasn't there.
But an organization most certainly can do something about the clubhouse culture. And ours just wasn't the culture of a championship winning team. There were far, far too many instances where we simply weren't competing, whether it was at the plate, in the field or on the bump.
It was not the deadline deal for a starter that tripped this team up. It was the lack of two frontline starter that hurt. Let's review. Senga started very well, but you have to manipulate the rotation just for him. Nice guy, but very fragile. Montas can not pitch in the bigs. Manaea needed more time to rehab. Holmes is hanging on, but he's NEVER pitched this much. He'll have a sore something next year, and will be limited. Peterson ran out of gas. He CAN'T be the ace. He needs to work on endurance. While it's exciting to see the three new kids on the block, it's so unfair to place the franchise on their shoulders. This ain't Seaver, Koosman and Matlack.
The bullpen has no clue, because the Mets think all of them should have a .50 ERA.
This off-season will be very interesting and challenging, but I say that EVERY winter.
I think the defense, except the trio of catchers, suck. Nimmo is decent, but...
They'll run it back (wards?), then expect Cohen to clean house for the 2027 season.
One more thing. Can y'all stop showing my stress test graph?!? (lol)
A lot of that is hindsight. For instance, there was no way to know Manaea would start the season hurt — it didn't happen until a couple weeks into Spring Training. And there was no way to know Senga would pull a hammy in mid-June after a stellar couple months.
But I would certainly agree there was a risk in the Holmes conversion. And I have no idea what possessed Stearns to sign Montas to that contract. That was unquestionably a mistake.
Had everyone been healthy, though — and I include the bullpen arms like Minter, Danny Young, Dedniel Nunez, etc. — there should have been enough pitching for a big-hitting team. Then all of a sudden there wasn't, and we weren't hitting consistently either.
Oh, and I should say, I only mention a starter at the deadline because so much noise was made about it. Centerfield, too. But there just wasn't a lot out there at a price Stearns was willing to pay, and I agree. Giving up one of the three young guns for a short-term fix on a struggling team would have been tremendously short-sighted.
Pete Alonso has an .898 OPS in September, dude. We're all for fair criticism but if you're just gonna come in here and yell at us every day, you're free to read other newsletters.
A different Mets post that I read regularly bans all-capital posts. I think it’s a great idea. You’ve put together a nice thing here. Thank you and keep it going!
Are we just hoping to get a wildcard for the sake of getting a wildcard??? WHAT'S THE POINT???? We are now down to 2 viable starting pitchers. I get that "anything can happen in the playoffs", but really? How far can they honestly get playing mostly bullpen games. This is NOT a playoff-caliber team. Let's just get to the end of the season and HOPE that Stearns can fix things in the off-season.
For all of the talent that the Mets seem to have this is a major disappointment. This is all coming down to pitching, fielding, and hitting in the clutch. When they won Tuesday, they hit in the clutch. When they lost last night they did nothing.
4. Get Mendoza gone!!! Need an experienced manager - lineups are terrible - no creativity - doesn’t take risks - and think the players walk all over him. Smug Sterns took Mendoza off the cheap $$ pile and it shows up every game. Teams with LESS talent who have smart EXPERIENCED managers are wiping the Mets ass
MENDOZA and some of his coaches MUST GO - it is a less expensive move than what others he can make
Were you saying this last year? A good poker player know how to play a bad hand well. The pitching has been injured, unreliable, and from July on just plain awful. And can we please give Acuna 2b! McNeil to dh
I agree with the assessment of Tong. TOTALLY unfair. If the Mets had gotten two aces, not two # 3 & 4 type starters, this is a different narrative. Peterson, at his best, is a # 3 starter. McCarver used to say "Routine players make routine plays routinely." This off season, many of the players need to hit the gym. Soto needs to stop preening and take yoga classes to move laterally.
After all the emotional venting (including me), the objective reality has been the same since opening day: pursuing playoffs with too many what ifs, if only’s, reclamation and second chance projects had to fail. That many uncertainties can turn into magic. Sure, hitting and pitching covered the obvious warts for a while. Then cold reality settled in. From the 30,000 ft perspective, inconsistent hitting and mediocre to poor pitching never had a chance. Just like in the NBA, mediocre also ran playoff seeds wont win. They generate more money feeding off fans unrealistic hopes.
There were two occurrences where I felt Baty makes the play at third if he's there. With how the defense has played lately, he has to be in there instead of Vientos.
Vientos should not be in the field. When he plays he should dh. His defense is awful.
Yes yes yes yes - but can Mandoza get off his frozen methods of righty lefty crap at the plate?
apparently not, right? I feel for Mendy because his starting pitching staff has really let him down this year. Can't blame Tong for his troubles, he's trying but he got out of that first inning with help from Taylor and he needed help from his third baseman there in the 3rd and didn't get it.
Great writing. I'm right there with you with this team.

Tong has been rough from the beginning. He's green. I don't think it's the catcher.

Ithis season,
Alonso has a pretty good glove, throwing not so much. Think targeting Alonso is off base. He's not part of the problem.
He stays only if he doesn’t try to break the bank w a massive contract. We have deeper needs that will be expensive and a Dave Kingman we don’t need to win
Really over the top to analogize Alonso to Kingman.
But Soto's defense, tho. He has NO lateral mobility.
I'm a big Soto fan. He's expanded his game this year with the stolen bases even though he doesn't have blazing speed. Maybe he can improve in the field, he's still young.

Good grief.

If nothing else, getting to the post season will bring in some revenue which can be put to good use.
The 1st series is on the road.
Didn't know that all 3 games would be on road. Surprises me, thanks. Btw, does the visiting team not rake in any dough?
That I don't know. It's just the 1st series then it becomes 4 of 7 if they get that far, the 2 or 3 games

You said it all. I’ve been done with this team for weeks now. Miami sweeps and finally puts this team and season out of our misery.
It's infuriating how many times they ground out to secomd base. Chief culprits right now: Nimmo, McNeil and even Baty.

The playoffs are for the taking, but no other team wants to seize it.
