I’ve been a Mets fan since day one, a Brooklyn Dodger fan before that. This season is growing into the most disappointing season in their history for me, and it’s only May. My expectations were high at the end of last season, and have gone downhill since. The dreadful Wilpons have been gone for over five years, and the team is in the toilet. David Stearns has been in charge for three off-seasons, and the team is in the toilet. Are the kids fun to watch? Yeah, but I didn’t envision this season as a see-if-the-kids-are-any-good season. I thought Stearns would do some addition and subtraction, and they would be contenders. Bo Bichette, Luis Robert Jr., Jorge Polanco, Marcus Semien, Devin Williams, Luke Weaver, Freddy Peralta. 😭

"This is the norm - lifelessness, lethargy, lackadaisical play." I'm skeptical of injecting emotional stuff into bad performance. Has there ever been a bad baseball team that didn't look lifeless, lethargic, or lazy? The hitting is abysmal, the pitching is up and down. They've got to straighten McLean out, that's worrisome. I guess they're going to bring Jared Young and Minter up. Might help a little. Young looked good in his 20 at bats. Very hard to watch Baty and Vientos flailing. Regarding Polanco and Robert: didn't the analytics guys tell Stearns that injury prone players tend to stay injury prone?

What galls is the predictability. Vientos came up with two men on and two out. I was at the game and turned to my son and said “he’s going to get a first pitch sinker down, swing at it, and hit a grounder to short”. Well, I was wrong. He got a first pitch change up down, and hit a grounder to short. No one’s perfect.

Worse yet was when Vientos struck out swinging at a pitch that hit him.

McLean is having growing pains. Please treat him carefully.

They had hits. Not enough hits with power or key hits. The pen did its job, but not the starter. Biochette made a key lazy play that helped the Reds score a run. They find a way to lose.

Oh well.

I started watching and lasted one inning. I decided to watch something with less bloodshed, so we watched Band of Brothers instead. This team needs new leadership. I was sticking with Mendoza but its become clear he doesn't have his team's attention or following. New pitching and hitting coaches who don't depend so much on analytics. Maybe I'll watch Die Hard 2 tonight.

Maybe the effect of "we got our manager--a good guy--fired" would do some good. Maybe not. Of course, he's Stearns' hand-picked guy such that Stearns would be adding to the amount of egg already on his face. His career isn't looking too rosy right now.

The lack of comments here says everything. The team has lost the fans. Only ones showing up probably already had their tickets, are season ticket holders or are the infrequent attendees where this game was supposed to be an exciting, special day out. Living in far upstate NY, I’d be the latter. You know, guys, I really do feel bad for you. The players at least make obscene money during this. Sadly, you’ll be editorializing to an empty house too.

I'm watching the game. The last thing I want to hear is another dissection of how bad the hitting is by Gelb. Some things are just plum ugly and the more you talk about it, the worse it is. But I guess they have to fill up their slot and earn their salaries.

I hate to double down on the It's Always Cloudy in Queens, but I watch the young players play and I think with the exception of Ewing, I get very big 1994-1996 vibes. Hyped up prospects that aren't around when the team turns the corner and becomes good for a few years.
