John Harper on Twitter said: Lindor having a weird year. Being accountable only goes so far. Admitted being at fault for not "stepping into the throw" on DP he failed to turn. Admitted he should have gotten into rundown, allowed runners to get to 2nd/3rd. Forgot how many outs vs. Cards. Too many mistakes.
My response: Exactly! I said as much (though not as eloquently as the great John Harper!) to
@AnthonyDiComo and @richmacleod.
The low BA is one thing. Poor fundies is inexcusable. He needs a “mental” day off or three.
Can’t resist this but the “it’s early…calm down people, they’ll be alright” fans lost their credibility last year. No matter the names on the back my mantra remains, “ you stink until you don’t..you’re good until you’re not” still plays. There is a purgatory here: it’s called terminal mediocrity. Different ways to qualify: win a bunch then lose a bunch or win one-lose one. Either way it defines mediocrity: .500 ball. Right now they epitomize mediocrity while trending to stink status.
Fire Mendy. Why is Lindor still in the lead off spot? Managers who know baseball drop guys in the order to
A) get them going and
B) hold them accountable for their play.
Mendoza does none of that. His excuse of the Lindor brain fart on the bases was “he kept us out of the double play” like it was something he meant to do which is a blatant lie. No play in baseball is practiced that gets you picked off at third base to break up a double play. Lindor and his mental errors have become a problem and more prominent since Soto came. Look back at it and seriously look into his play before Soto and after. I’m sick and tired of the Mets not playing in cold weather. We just had two teams from warm weather climes beat us. The A’s are from Sacramento and D’backs from Arizona for Christ sake. JT Ginn is not Cy Young either. The guy had a 5 ERA coming into last nites game and the Mets put up not one professional at bat. This isn’t even Myers problem when the game got out of hand. Mendy instills no discipline in this team. I think the guys have zero respect for him and he took all the blame at the end of last season and Stearns got rid of everybody so Mendy is the only survivor of the purge. If this team keeps playing like dog water he has to go. If he refuses to call players out and shake line ups up then he has no business being a big league manager. His days have to be numbered now. Thankfully the Masters is on this weekend.
I thought Lindor's baserunning when he was caught off third was problematic, and I was surprised when the SNY booth was not critical. The pen has had issues in the last few games, too, though one problem was that Myers was left in too long when the game was so close.
After last season, it would have been nice if they had a good start to the season. Instead, we had multiple issues, including injuries that worsen the defense.
I don't think it's time to panic or anything. But extended bad play should be addressed somehow. They do seem to be in a funk. As Cher said, "snap out of it!"
Interesting to hear McNeil's comments about Lindor. When a couple of young athletes argue or have a physical confrontation, I don't know what's so surprising about that. It's the kind of thing a certain kind of sportswriter (gratefully, not on this blog) feasts on and gallons of ink have been spilled on it.
Just watched tonight's (Saturday's) game. 11-6 loss. If you are associated with this team and not embarrassed, you should be. Stearns and Mendoza are not going to save this team. As far as Senga, hope is not a strategy. Just DFA him already. This is a .500 team at best. No chemistry. Too many flaws.
It's getting late kinda early. Or, just getting ugly early?

I agree that Mendoza is robotic. I don't see the link of Lindor's lackluster play with the arrival of Soto.
