Re: "We know the Mets have a logjam of infielders ..."
And the Mets sign two FA infielders?
Stearns is going to have to teach a master class in roster construction to reach the promised land of a possible postseason ensemble.
I'd hate for Acuna to go without ever getting his shot here.
And, off topic, 'Juan Soto on his relationship with Francisco Lindor: “Good, I get along very well with Lindor, you know, he’s a great ball player and a tremendous person, and a happy person in the clubhouse amongst everything else.”' 📰 - LuzGarcia TV
I'm a ditto on Acuña. Big time. My hope before the Semien trade was Stearns penciling him in at second and eyeing Jett for center and Benge for left, but it remains to be seen if we're going that way.
But I know a ballplayer when I see one. I'd hate to trade Luisangel away. He'll star wherever and whenever he gets the chance.
By the way, he has 8 HR 29 RBI in 34 games in the Venezuelan Winter League this year, and he's slashing .281/.401/.570. He's swiped 10 bags, too.
Oh yes, Semien was brought in to start. It's a deal I still haven't fully wrapped my head around.
Had we dealt Nimmo as part of a package to get Ketel Marte, I could have dug that. Big time. He checks all our boxes. And had Semien been 27, I would have been cool with that, too.
I just don't get how installing a block at second base in front of two of our most promising prospects fits with the short-contract/pipeline-based model I thought we were pursuing now.
The only thing I can think is, we're still on the hunt for Marte and either Williams or Acuña will have to be part of the package. If they're going to give up Marte, Arizona is going to want someone to pair with Perdomo up the middle.
But that could just be wishful thinking on my part. Trying to make sense of the senseless.
Yes, it's very frustrating not to know what strategies are guiding Cohen's/Stearns' actions. Those two are too smart to do senseless things. If using Acuna as trade fodder was the idea, then Semien makes more sense. Of course, trading Nimmo only makes sense if they're signing a FA outfielder. I've read they're not really saving a whole lot of money with that trade. I find it hard to believe that the Mets assume Polanco can field first well enough to be the regular there. Perhaps a ploy related to Bellinger negotiations? I'm hoping Polanco's role is no more than a better version of Starling Marte.
Polanco should be able to handle first base reasonably well. I don't think he'll have Pete's scooping skills (which will matter at some key point in some key game because that's just how baseball works), but his range is better, and he should tighten up our infield defense. There won't be as many holes.
But it's not ideal.
I don't think we're really in on Belli. He's almost certain to go back to the Yankees anyway. He's tailor-made for that ballpark and it's tailor-made for him.
Which leaves us with a two-part process to get Ketel Marte. Step one: lock down second base with a proven veteran for a couple years. Step two: pick the second base prospect you want to keep and deal the other one. You now have time to let the one you keep develop.
THAT makes sense to me, at least from a wheeling-dealing perspective. So does the alternative of not trading Jett or Luisangel and rotating them between center and second base. We're athletic enough now to move guys around a little.
We may be in on Kyle Tucker, too. If we sign him, it's likely to play left, which would mean McNeil is out of a job. That sets some more pieces on the chess board in motion.
Why would a Jewish owner and Jewish GM get rid of David ben Peter? That would be horrible for those of us Jewish Mets fans here in NY and David's huge following in Israel.
Just sign Tucker.

I hope you're right. Certainly quickest guy around. Don't know how much playing time he'll get if he's not traded.

It’s amazing the lack of respect he has for the Mets fan’s favorite
If touted minor league prospects are hitting .260, figure in the majors they'll be hitting .230. That's not good enough to make the playoffs.
Adolis García could have been a good option to cover for Nimmo, although he plays right field. I don't know if he's ever played left field.
He's appeared in 16 games in LF for a total of 89.2 innings
👍🏻
