When David Stearns alleged during Hot Stove that the Mets were going to focus on RUN PREVENTION, I didn't know that he was referring to our OWN lineup!!!
I've shared thinking about Stearn's sole ownership of this a few times.
My worry is shifting to the kids you talked about today. I watch them and worry they are learning how to lose, and that becoming acceptable The Mets have a wonderful talent pool built over several years. Some good prospects were dealt. We see them from time to time around the league and think about what came to the roster in return. Enough said about that...
But the ones that came up since - say - Baty. He has been used like a Swiss army knife and left wherever Just long enough to stop looking lost. Once progress is evidenced, he gets sent somewhere else on the field to look lost. Vientos the same. These kids are learning to lose while working their tails off.
At some point, Team control ends. Then we will see the kids go somewhere, anywhere else. For nothing. Its one thing to Flush 2026 in Flushing. Its another to "eat your seed corn."
What an absolute trainwreck of a season this is so far and there's very signs of any formidable recovery. The roster is a mashup, the manager is basically a placeholder, and the GM or POBO or whatever you want to call him has totally lost any feel for the game.
We're back home today and we have Semien in the 4 -hole! This is the midst of yet another offensive drought!
I really have to wonder now if any of the players on this roster will be around when we're serious contenders again - maybe some of the starters if they're able to survive this season. Benge and Ewing showed some promise but they too may get ruined in this trainwreck.
Sadly, I think we can forget about Mauricio, Baty, and Vientos - they are AAAA players at best.
Dead in the water really sums up this club - and it's still only May. We're on the way to losing 90+.
Stearns is too wedded to spreadsheets and divorced from humanity. I concede, of course, that I've never been in the locker room. But from the stands, it seemed that Jose Iglesias had a huge role in turning the 2024 season around as a guy who brought the team together. The season changed just as he was called up at the end of May. I'll never forget him rapping on the field and the whole team being out there with him having a grand old time. Iglesias wanted to come back in '25, but Stearns tossed him in the crapper for Nick Madrigal, who never even played for the Mets. Coincidentally or not, the team fell apart. Here we are in '26 and -- however you want to describe it happening -- most of the guys who anchored the locker room, home-grown Mets, are gone. This group is Lindor, Baty, Vientos, Alvarez, and a bunch of mercenaries making incredible amounts of money, some of whom may not even be here next year. I doubt that Baty and Vientos (with the other two being hurt) -- young guys still making minimums -- have the gravitas to turn this crowd into a team. You can keep pinch hitting Tyrone Taylor for Baty because the spreadsheet inanely tells you to do so, but your strategies -- no matter how stupid they are -- won't matter if you don't have any care for constructing a locker room, and it's evident that Stearns doesn't care.
Well said. Since 6/13/2025 when we had the best record in MLB we’ve gone 60-86. Only better than the Rockies, Angels and Twins. We had a terrible approach at the plate last year too (with much worse pitching). We have new players, new hitting coaches and still can’t hit and score runs. It’s insane
MB: Hard to understand how you can be so critical of their inability to produce quality at bats and not blame it on the manager and the coaching staff. Doesn't make sense. No effort at all to extend ABs etc.
The Mets lost when the first team to score did so in the bottom of the ninth. So, the "bright spot" was partially the pitching. I also see reference to more walks, suggesting some patience.
Plus, there were some more bright moments by the rookies in the outfield. Who the heck wants these guys to have less playing time so Luis Roberts Jr. can play a bit more?
The problem, of course, was the hitting. I checked, and some batting practice ERA guy is starting today. The Mets have to win. A win is a win. But it isn't assured either.
The idea that they had no chance of winning, after they repeatedly did win such games recently, is understandable if mistaken. They eked out a 2-1 game versus the Nats, for instance.
Anyway, the reason why many people are watching is for the younger players. We will see if they get rid of any of the others if this keeps going on. The new people, other than Luke Roberts, at this point seem quite disposable. Bichette seemed like he was showing why they are paying him the big bucks. Then it's back to this. If they are going to suck, a guy like him is asinine. The same old "one big guy, a bunch of mediocrity" that I remember from earlier in the century.
High expectations...very low results...very depressing for 2026. Giving the youngsters playing time now will lead us to a decent to hopeful 2027! Let's Go Knicks!
Michael,
Sadly, there is ONE thing to say:
When David Stearns alleged during Hot Stove that the Mets were going to focus on RUN PREVENTION, I didn't know that he was referring to our OWN lineup!!!

Did I mention Stearns solely owns this?
Steve
Its never been easy being a Mets fan.

Glad I didn't watch

I'd like to see more focus on the batting coaches, their approaches, advice, etc.
Why are very hittable pitches being watched? Are the batters over guessing? What's going on?

Becoming the Marlins' bitches just isn't as much fun as I thought it would be
