If I were there as I was when Strawberry returned to Shea as a Dodger, I would stand for Pete's first at bat, applaud and thank him for his time as a Met, and then every time after treat him the same as any other visiting player which would be to boo him!
It’s all the bad deals over the years that take a toll on long time Mets fan s: horrendous acquisitions and departures. Currently PCA and previously Wheeler are the ones who bother me the most. You see, ultimately the front office is judged as they judge their players: you win, the world is right. You lose, you’re a loser.
All these Pete lovers - like the clowns who left the stadium last night after his last at-bat - have made me so very pro-Sterns.
Dear Pete lovers - he doesn't love you back. He loves money.
The guy could have been the King of New York for the rest of his life, but chose money and now plays for a bad team in a dead city who will forget him quickly after he's gone.
Bookmark all comments from the Peter lovers and play them back in 4 years when he's toast but still being paid all-star money by the Orioles.
See here’s what drives me nuts. We never won anything with Pete Alonso. He had some great moments with the Mets that will always remember. But contracts are not rewards for the past. They are based on future performance. And as much as signing him to a 5 year contract would be a mistake - Pete made it clear he had no interest in coming back. He announced he was opting out of his contract minutes after the season ended last year.
Had the Mets and Pete come to an agreement for this year, he would not have been the difference between making the playoffs and not, just like he isn’t making the playoffs with the orioles this season either.
He left for business reasons. No hard feelings. I’m sure once he retires they will likely host a Pete Alonso day at Citifield. But let’s not make this more than it truly is
No. He had plenty of interest in coming back but the Mets made it clear they weren't going to pay him market rate. Its laughable, btw, how you're very sure the Mets wouldn't have made the playoffs this year "just like the Orioles". Look at what Alonso's done and look at what the Mets' first basemen have done and give it a thought or two.
The Mets are 13 wins out of contention for the last wild card spot. Pete isn’t worth 13 wins, his currently war is 4.1. So not sure how you think he would have made a difference. The Mets failures this year are many more than 1 player/position.
And frankly I would have taken the deal the orioles offered too. But do you think if pete had any offer’s from legitimate contenders he would have chosen the orioles? The orioles paid far more than market value - which is why they landed him.
Wrong again. Look at what Schwarber got, older than Alonso and doesn't play the field. Then you'll know what the market is for power hitters these days. Btw, your literal interpretation of WAR is not the way things work.
So explain to me how Pete playing for the Mets eliminates the current 13 game deficit they have in the wild card standings. What facts are you providing to support your fictional argument?
schwarber? Who hit 56 homers last year and 44 this year and signed for less money than Alonso. I’d take Schwarber over Pete. Pete’s contract was not market - because he had to go to a non contender to get it. I have no problem with him chasing money, but even if Cohen has endless money, he didn’t get that way by wasting it. Alonso’s contact will age poorly. And it would have really hamstrung the Mets once the hard cap is implemented after the upcoming lock out.
Alonso would have upgraded their lineup at first base. But he doesn’t replace the games missed due to injury of Soto and Lindor. Doesn’t replace Semien’s at bats, or the poor performance of Bichette in the first half. Or the issues with Robert’s, etc.
We also had poor pitching from Peralta, etc
No one player would have saved this season
The Mets came to life after all the pressure was off and the trade deadline passed. People have recency bias and they forget how dreadful this team was for much of the year
Imo, there was bad blood between Pete and Stearns after the previous year negotiations. Pete just didn't have a better offer then and took the two year option deal knowing that he could and probably would opt out.
Of course, the entire fiasco could of been prevented if the Mets budged on the long-term deal which is really all Pete wanted.
Oh well, water under the bridge now.
We can all root for Pete and Lindor hitting their 300th during this series.
Nice to see Tong pitch 6 quality innings. I’m rooting for him

The front office has a history of poor decision making and poor judgement of talent.
Whose PCA????
By the way, Pete’s perfect fall guy throws batting practice against him tonight.

I believe they'd be hovering around .500 and still in the mix if they had a first baseman like Alonzo

Speaking of bad FO deals, how about PCA for Trevor Williams and a few months of Javier Baez??
That one, it turns out, is probably much worse than letting Pete go.
So.....was it a mistake to screw up financial negotiations with Alonzo, or was his mindset to depart anyway.

So tonite the Mets are facing a guy with 15 losses...and a big ERA. The Mets will make him look like Cy Young.....its what they do! 😂
"...the heinous mistake this front office made this past winter." Say it again. Thank you, David Stearns.
