Is the Subway Series worth the media circus that surrounds it? ✍️
When the Subway Series was introduced in 1999, it was a fun novelty to see the two New York teams square off against each other. Both teams were finally successful at the same time, which led to them facing off against each other in the 2000 World Series.
Unquestionably, it has produced some memorable moments over the years. The Dave Mlicki one-hit shutout, the Matt Franco walk-off, Shawn Estes’s home run off Rodger Clemens, David Wright’s walk-off against Mariano Rivera, the doubleheader that went from Shea Stadium to Yankee Stadium in the same day, and Carlos Delgado’s nine RBIs, Amed Rosario hitting a walk-off home run as a member of the Mets in Yankee Stadium, and who can forget Francisco Lindor’s three-home-run game in 2021? These were all fun moments that, in the grand scheme of things, were just another game on the schedule out of 162.
What is far more critical, where the schedule is concerned, is playing the Phillies, the Braves, and any other National League teams in the playoff race and who could potentially be Wild Card winners. The games have far more impact for the race to October, but instead, New York is treated to a media circus mid-season, which has far more vitriol now that Juan Soto is a New York Met. Spending just one season in the Bronx now makes him a traitor in the eyes of Yankee fans, which, of course, is being ratcheted up by sports “analysts” that do more screaming than analyzing.
The novelty has worn off after 26 years. Even the novelty of playing the American League now is gone since the National League has the DH, and the two leagues play each other regularly on the schedule.
In small doses, it is a fun taste of playoff baseball during the regular season, but it should be just that. A small dose. Both teams need more games against opponents that actually matter, which also fills the need for high-stress games before the playoffs begin.
Still, it seems the majority of New Yorkers like having it and the spectacle it brings, so until it changes, let the battle for New York begin once again.
Let’s Go Mets.
