1) with a 6 man rotation, that would mean one less arm in the bullpen. Figure Butto in the pen which is like Lugo a few years ago, can only use him once and then two to three days rest. I assume they are counting on the arms in Syracuse to come up and take some innings.
2) Why not look for another established starter in the trade market. Personally, I would like to see the Mets try to obtain Pablo Lopez. Good contract and controllable. What would it take to get him?
3) Alonso has nowhere to go but the Mets. Yes, he can go to Seattle (bad park for hitters) but in reality, his value is in NY. They should just get it done already.
4) Bring back Igleias and Winker. Good for the team.
Except for a possible run at Sasaki, it's fair to assume we're done with starting pitching. A lefty for the bullpen is probably the last box to be checked on the bump (Minter is a great fit).
So, it's all about Pete now. Plug him in and things really shape up.
We could be in for some surprises, too. We have a lot to work with. I'd be getting pretty excited if I had my feet under Mendy's desk.
- Without Sasaki, the Mets are asking Montas, Holmes and Canning/Megill/Butto to give them 81 starts. It also puts a ton of pressure on the Mets pitching apparatus (lab, development, coaching, analytics, etc.) to repeat the success had with Sevy and Manaea with somewhere between 3-6+ pitchers in a season they plan on competing for a WS. Now, looking at the Dodgers starters in the NLCS I know you don’t need the Four Horseman rotation to get things done, but it would be nice to only have 1-2 of the SP be guys that need a ton of work to reach their potential. That’s why, assuming he hasn’t signed before Sasaki, I’d like the Mets to consider somebody like Flaherty as a Plan B and push Canning to the minors. That would mean an opening day rotation of Senga, Manaea, Sasaki/Flaherty, Peterson, Montas, Holmes. Much stronger and well rounded with the depth guys working on their repertoire in the minors.
- While it makes a ton of sense to sign Pete or Bregman, has there been any talk of the team wanting to hold off for Vlad or Murakami in 2025? Signing Bregman or Pete doesn’t preclude them from going after one of those guys next year, but it sure does create an even worse logjam for prospects. I like the idea of holding off for those 2 because they will cost much less combined (if you could land both) but will be worth it because of their ages.
How about Jose Quintana for the rotation? He pitched pretty well for us last season overall and would provide great depth. And we'd probably be able to get him for the same or similar contract we signed him to last year - $13M/year.
My favorite line was just sign everyone. May Steve Cohen continue to make hundreds of millions at his day job so that whatever he spends on salaries and Luxury taxes just doesn’t matter. Happy holidays everyone
All I want is Pete for Christmas!
A couple of comments:

I just don't see them getting another major league contract for the rotation. It will be Sasaki or what they have now IMO.

Merry Christmas fellow Mets fans!

Stanek was solid and a return would be real nice!
