Welcome to the 2025 Just Mets Free Agency Guide!

Similar to our trade deadline guide from this past summer, this is a complete breakdown of over 35 potential players that the Mets could look to sign this offseason from the expected to the surprising. This year’s guide will cover starting pitchers, relievers, outfielders, first basemen, middle infielders, third baseman and DHs.

Let’s get into it…

🃏 = Wild Card
🥶 = Unlikely

🅱️ = Scott Boras client
🏷️ = Qualifying offer attached
🌏 = International free agent

Contract projections per Spotrac…

FIRST BASEMEN

Pete Alonso 🅱️ (*Signed by Orioles)

Position: 1B | Most Recent Team: Mets | Projected Contract: 5 yrs, $147M | Age: 31 | Possibility: 🔥
2025 Stats: 3.6 fWAR, .272/.347/.524, 38 HR, 41 2B, 126 RBI, 141 wRC+

For the second consecutive year, the free agency saga of Pete Alonso will once again consume New York’s offseason. After a prolonged negotiation period last winter, the Mets slugger produced in a massive way for the club in what was essentially a one-year deal. Alonso totaled 80 extra-base hits and drove in 126 runs in 2025, fueling the team’s offense for a majority of the season alongside Juan Soto.

It is unknown how keen David Stearns will be on bringing Alonso back long-term – especially with the recent emphasis on “run prevention” – but knowing what he means to the fan base and what he does for this lineup still gives the Mets a better shot vs. the field… assuming both sides can find a middle ground on the term of a deal.

Cody Bellinger 🅱️

Position: 1B/OF | Most Recent Team: Yankees | Projected Contract: 6 yrs, $182.7M | Age: 30 | Possibility: 👀
2025 Stats: 4.9 fWAR, .272/.334/.480, 29 HR, 98 RBI, 89 R, 13 SB, 125 wRC+

Perhaps the Mets could be interesting in stealing a free agent from their cross-town rivals for the second straight year? After being acquired from the Cubs in a trade, Bellinger was fantastic for the Yankees last season as his power swing proved to be a perfect fit for that ballpark and his defensive versatility shined.

The Mets would certainly benefit from being able to use Bellinger flexibly across first base and all three outfield positions, and would be an interesting pivot from Alonso. But while the fit makes sense, I have a hard time believing the Yankees will allow this to happen again.
