The 2024 New York Mets are one hell of an incredible story…✍️
When play began on May 30, the Mets were 22-33 on the season and were imploding from within.
The season looked over before June had even arrived.
In the eyes of many, the Mets were already dead and we were consigned to a long, tough summer in Queens.
However, life can come at you fast. Things can change on a dime.
Just ask Ferris Bueller.
That’s especially the case in baseball.
Since May 30, the Mets are an impressive 52-31, which is tied with the Diamondbacks for the best record in baseball during that span.
Talk about an impressive turnaround.
And, despite an up-and-down second half of the year, in which this team has tripped over themselves on more than one occasion, New York is now a season-high 10 games over .500.
Furthermore, the Mets have won 12 of their last 17 games and have survived some back-breaking losses and an excruciating travel schedule.
Despite having their teeth kicked in by both the Padres and the Diamondbacks in heartbreaking fashion, the Mets have hauled themselves off the canvas each and every time to keep on rolling.
As a result, and after beating the Red Sox on Monday thanks to some dominant pitching from a locked-in Luis Severino, coupled with some clutch hitting and more Francisco Lindor brilliance, the Mets are now winners of five straight and are just 1/2 game back of the Braves for the final Wild Card spot in the National League.
That is pretty remarkable given that some were proclaiming the Mets dead as recently as last week.
But, in essence, that’s why the 2024 New York Mets are an incredible story.
And the ending hasn’t even been written yet. This ball club has been written off so many times yet, somehow, some way, they keep finding ways to hang on in there.
Despite being seemingly dead and buried heading into June, the Mets were able to embark on a stretch of elite winning baseball to breathe new life into their postseason hopes and dreams. They’ve navigated a tricky trend of euphoric highs and crushing lows since the All-Star break.
Three games behind the Braves heading into the weekend, the Mets are now breathing down Atlanta’s neck with 24 games to play.
Their playoff odds have nearly doubled in a three-day span.
Of course, it helps when you have an elite star on your team leading the charge in Francisco Lindor. The shortstop is having his best season as a Met by far, putting together a hugely impressive MVP campaign.
Lindor extended his on-base streak to 31 games and his hitting streak to 13 straight games in Monday night’s win. He also matched his hits total (153) from 2023 in 22 fewer games. He leads the National League with 7.0 fWAR, 4/10 of a point higher than Shohei Ohtani.
Still, he’s currently hitting .271/.342/.493/.835 with 29 homers, 36 doubles, 25 stolen bases and 81 RBIs, Lindor is playing like a true MVP.
Now, given that Ohtani is currently doing God-like things for the Dodgers and is on the verge of joining the 50-50 club, Lindor will likely have to settle for second place in National League MVP voting. However, there is no doubt that Lindor has been the Mets’ MVP given the way he’s carried this team. His 2024 season has been a spectacular story on its own, and it is a year we likely won’t soon forget.
And, this is a discussion for another day, anyway.
We also shouldn’t forget what the Mets have been able to achieve in 2024, no matter how the year ends.
After all, to rise from the dead so many times is damn impressive. No matter how many times this team has been counted out, they’ve found a way to stay alive and make things interesting.
With 24 games remaining, it seems that the sky is the limit for these Mets, who appear to be hitting their last stride at just the right time.
From being one of the worst teams in baseball going into June to now pulling back to a 1/2 game out of a Wild Card spot just days after being three games out, the 2024 New York Mets continue to amaze at every turn.
This truly has been a remarkable season.
We now wait in anticipation to see what comes next.
