The Mets today made their first significant roster move in what should be a very busy off-season for the club.
The Mets announced they’ve acquired CF José Siri from the Rays in a trade for RHP Eric Orze.
Siri, 29, is a defense-first player, as he hit .187/.255/.366 with 18 home runs, 47 RBI with 170 strikeouts in 448 plate appearances for Tampa Bay last season. Siri has hit 43 home runs in his last two seasons with the Rays, and will presumably replace Harrison Bader heading into 2025. Siri should pair with Tyrone Taylor to form an elite defensive tandem in center field, assuming Taylor recovers well from two off-season surgeries he’s undergone.
He had 12 defensive runs saved last season in CF and had 16 outs above average as well. Per Statcast, Siri ranked in the 89th percentile in speed, the 99th percentile in outs above average, and the 97th percentile in arm strength in 2024. Thanks in large measure to his elite defense, Siri has been worth 4.5 fWAR over his last two seasons in Tampa Bay.
Siri is under team control through 2028 - he earned $758,000 through arbitration in 2024.
Orze was already on the Mets’ 40-man roster, so there are no immediate roster implications with the trade.

MLB.com was first to report Siri had been acquired by the Mets. The Mets made the deal official shortly after it was reported.
