Mailbag: Spiraling Edition ✍️
After last night was a rainout, we figured why not do a Just Mets mailbag for this first time this season? Let’s get into it…
Steve: Why aren’t the Mets giving McLean or Tong one game to see if they can pitch better than Blackburn or Tidwell? I know they’re not on the 40 but we need to start winning games.
I understand the impulse to want to call up the big prospects, especially when things aren’t going well. But this front office is not going to make a rash decision and risk the development of some of their prized prospects for short-term gain, especially when that gain isn’t even guaranteed. I think you could argue that Blade Tidwell got the nod first solely because he had more Triple-A reps and, frankly, they may not be as invested in his development as year’s slipped down the prospect rankings in recent years.
Sean O’Connor: Brett Baty, Kevin Parada, and a mid-level prospect for Jarren Duran and Alex Bregman (we take the whole contract).
Holy hell, we’ve got a good old fashioned #BaronTrade right off the bat! I’ll give you the benefit of the doubt and assume that you’re being facetious here. In the two percent chance that you’re not, however, I’ll just say that I don’t think the Red Sox are gonna want to trade two of their only offensive players worth a damn in exchange for… Brett Baty and a failed catching prospect in Kevin Parada. Not to mention the fact that Boston just ruined their relationship with Rafael Devers over Alex Bregman, so they make have to eat that one.
Sam Bernstein: Do you think it was wise to allow Peterson to pitch a complete game over 100 pitches on June 11? He has looked tired and ineffective since then.
Honestly, I think the Mets not being able to give there starters an extra day of rest – something they were able to do much more often when Kodai Senga was healthy – has been a much bigger factor than the complete game was. It’s easy to forget that David Peterson was through seven dominant innings on very good efficiency in his first start after the shutout vs. Washington. It wasn’t until the 8th where he ran out of gas.
Rich Allen: Who/what determines whether Gary, Keith & Ron wear suits and ties versus casual slip on collared shirts? Sometimes even on the same stations such as SNY, one night they have on suits and another night they are casual.
This might honestly be my favorite question of this entire mailbag. There are times I’ve wondered, too, how they decide when it’s right to wear what. I’d have to imagine that this is a decision that either the producer makes or the talent is making together as a unit. When it’s cool enough outside or if it’s a big day at Citi Field – like a number retirement, for example – they’re gonna be in their suits. For those hot summer days, though, that’s when it seems like they go to the polos.
Stephen Chopnick: The Mets need to have Grimace throw out the first pitch tomorrow night- it worked last year to turn them around.
Ah-ha, that is what they’ve been missing!
Ronald Weisbrod: Why was Acuña sent down and Mauricio kept on roster? I know they want Acuña to get at bats. Just give him second base, He’s our best defensive second baseman, our best base runner, he’s exciting and makes things happen.
I see where you’re coming from here, but Luisangel Acuña really was not hitting at all for a pretty extended period of time. Over his last 39 games before being demoted, Acuña hit .154/.191/.154 with no extra-base hits, two RBI and 13 strikeouts. Acuña has also barely been above replacement level this year (0.2 bWAR and 0.3 fWAR) and we don’t know how a front office that didn’t acquire him really values him to begin with. I also think the Mets might be trying to catch some lightning or potentially boost the trade value of Ronny Mauricio here.
Tom Apicella: 1) How did you become a Mets fan? 2) What is your favorite moment as a Mets fan? 3) What is your best in-person experience at a game? 4) What is your favorite MLB Stadium?
I became a Mets fan because of my dad, but it took me into my teenage years to actually start paying attention. When I was 15 (the 2006 season) I finally started watching every game and from there, I was hooked for good.
I know it’s a copout to say it’s a tie, but it probably really is a tie between Johan Santana’s no-hitter in 2012, and when the Mets clinched the pennant in Chicago in 2015. I really never thought this team would ever get a no-hitter, and 2015 remains the only World Series run that I have personally seen.
The 2019 August comeback vs. the Nationals on a Friday night is without a doubt the best game I’ve ever been to in person. This was when the Mets were on their crazy run in the late summer of 2019 with guys like Michael Conforto, J.D. Davis, Wilson Ramos and Pete Alonso all having big years. After getting themselves back into Wild Card contention, they were down 6-3 in the 9th vs. the Nationals and scored four runs on a game-tying, three-run homer by Todd Frazier that we watched go down the line, and a Michael Conforto walk-off double. We also finally got to shout away the loud Nationals fans that sat next to us all night – it was awesome. The video I took of my friend celebrating eventually made it’s way into a Mets season tickets commercial, too.
Sadly I haven’t been to too many MLB stadiums at this point, so I can be a homer and just say it’s Citi Field. I have always wanted to visit Pittsburgh and Baltimore, though.
Michael Kramer: Jeff McNeil and Tyler Megill's trade value is as high as it will ever be. Can we get a front-line starting pitcher?
You are right that McNeil and Megill will likely never have a better trade value than they do right now, but it’s not nearly enough for a frontline starter. The availability of those caliber guys is incredibly rare as it is, especially with the extra Wild Card spots now, and any team that is willing to part with one of those guys is going to want a haul of young players in return. A 33-year-old super utility player and 29-year-old inconsistent middle-of-the-rotation arm isn’t gonna be particularly appealing.
Fernando Lozada: What, in your opinion, can we do to inject some life in the clubhouse? I understand the relationship between winning, losing and attitude, but are they missing the Winker/Iglesias dynamic that much?
I definitely think guys like Jose Iglesias and Jesse Winker helped the vibes last year, but to be fair Winker has still mostly been hanging around the club during his stint on the injured list. Also, as important as he was to the energy of this team last year, I’d really hope that an aging infielder with a 56 OPS+ this season in Iglesias wouldn’t be a major subtraction this season. Maybe they need a vocal leader to stand up and rally the troops – maybe that’s already happened in the players only meeting – or maybe they need to find some external energy to bring into the fold. It could also be the case of the team just needing to play better, though, which does naturally lighten the mood in most cases.
Dave Guatieri: Has Matt Allan been shut down??
There doesn’t seem to be a ton of public information about Matt Allan right now, weirdly enough. The transaction report shows that Allan was placed on the seven-day injured list on June 13th, but nowhere on the Cyclones website or MLB.com does it show what the injury actually is. It could be minor or just an opportunity to get Allan some extra rest, perhaps, but with his injury history you’re always on alert when this kind of thing happens.

I realize there is a massive age difference between us, but I'm just sorry that you didn't live the "Miracle" of '69, and the "Dream" of '86, and enjoy all of those great players back then. As for today's Mets, there is an absence of "fun" and enjoyment in their eyes, and it was missing just before their atrocious losing skid. I knew they had like 17 games in a row, or something crazy, and those teams (Braves, Phillies, Rays, Pirates) were ALL beatable. Just a thought: Could the Pete Alonso contract extension be weighing on the player's minds AGAIN? Pay the man, keep him a Met for life, and bring the JOY back to Mudville again! Lindor, Soto and Nimmo wear their hearts on their sleeves and they're locked in. What is Uncle Steve thinking by NOT doing the same with Polar Bear?
