Every team has made bad decisions… but there have been no worse decisions than letting Pete Alonso walk and bringing in Jorge Polanco.. I just have no idea what they possibly could have been thinking about… just makes me angry.. again you don’t let a homegrown player leave with the talent that he had.. you do what you have to do to make it work.. and obviously what I think was David Stearns had no feel for the Fan Base and what Pete meant to them as well as of course the team

Even if you thought Alonso wouldn't be any good in years 4 and 5 on his contract, you'd still have him along with Soto and Lindor for a couple of years. The result of Stearns' decision is the current lost season, wasting Soto and Lindor in their primes.

Nobody can predict what a ball player could be in a few years.. he could DH he totally would’ve been worth it bringing back him instead.. but in reality, Beau Bichette is a better hitter.. what bothered me the most was them putting their faith 100% into Bret Baty and Mark Vientos.. very very bad call although to have on the team I think Baty is a good guy to have.. just not someone to Bet the farm on.. and Vientos, the two worst players of the year belong to him!

I was a guy constantly criticizing Pete.....bad baserunning, poor judgement in the field....I was pissed that he caused 2 injuries to starters caused by his failures in the field...see Senga. But I never thought it'd turn out like this tragedy. Palanco has had real bad luck--I feel for him. He needs a change of scenery. But Young is fantastic and why would you NOT want him to play regularly so he can maintain a groove. He's smooth in the field and LOOKS like a first baseman..like Atlantas does.

I definitely agree that Young should be the starter against RHP’s. Personally I’d like to see Billy Amick emerge as a candidate to share the job. He’s got 30 HRs in the minors this season.

Does Clifford need glasses?

Jared Young's lefty righty splits aren't all that dramatic. Turning the page, I love Benge but you've got yourself a job to convince people that Sal Stewart with 94 rbi's in 127 games shouldn't be ROY.

Would the Mets consider trying Soto at first à la Bryce Harper?

Young deserves to play every day. He has earned it. The Mets have more to worry about than finding a platoon candidate. First base is the least of their worries.

The best option (unfortunately) is a left-handed hitting bat (unless Boy Genius decides to ask Uncle Stevie for some wampum to sign Ty France - who BTW is a very good defensive 1B-man). The Mets should try to sign international (Japanese) FA, corner infielder, Teruaki Sato. He's having his best year in the NPB for the Hanshin Tigers (28 dingers and a 1.020 OPS - .315 BA). He is also considered to have a good glove (albeit mostly at 3B). But the Yankees, Phillies and Dodgers are also potential suitors. And given the impending CBA lockout and ultimate salary caps (both max and min), teams on the precipice of imposing salary restraint (Mets are #1) might think twice about extending their checkbook.

Enough moaning about Pete already. Can't we just move on?

Rich, for months, basically admitted the Mets weren't really worth caring too much about given their play. Things have changed, huh?

The team has a realistic chance of ending this season at .500. It won't be easy. The current rate of good play, especially the replacement pitching, can falter. But it's quite possible.

Polanco was a mistake. Semien was dubious but has shown some value, especially as part of a larger plan to move on from multiple players. Polanco isn't even doing that. He should be gone.

The problem overall is not deciding that an extended payday for Alonso was not worth it. That is at least debatable. It is that you need a true replacement at first base. I think Bichette was supposed to replace the offense and superstar role to some degree. You can't replace the fan love as easily.

There could have been various options to replace the defense. Find some reasonably priced person. You could platoon. You might find a surprise like Young. You knew Baty or Vientos was dubious.

Hi Joe, can I drink that water that you consume in the Bronx? I hear that's it's the best tasting water in the land!!!! .................. Mets to reach .500???????????? C'mon man, just because they've been hot lately. They have one of the worst hitting lineups in MLB (even when Soto returns to health) and lack a real #1 SP!!! And they're barely over .500 since Green took over the ship.

They have been at a 7-3 or so clip lately. Being .500 with their schedule was reasonable. Now they are winning series vs the Padres. They could have won one vs the Dodgers or Brewers if Baty wasn’t in the OF. Now he needn’t be.

I acknowledge it is an uphill battle. But until they go on a losing streak again, it’s a reasonable thing to aim for at this time. Even a few games under, when they were around 20 not that long ago, would be impressive.

Joe, Keep the Kool-Aid flowing. I like optimism (I am also clearly, one myself) and certainly hope that you are correct in your prognostication. But I think that your rose-colored glasses are tinged with deep-crimson! 😁
