IMO, the elephant in the Mets front office is Vlad Jr. I think they don't want anyone in the way of going all in on him as a FA, the deadline in a trade, or anytime since whenever. That's why they are not going to spend big or long at 1st or 3rd at this point. The seeming lack of a logical plan B leads me to this conclusion. Vlad Jr is their plan A and plan B.
I've been thinking along these lines myself. In fact, I'm sure they're thinking of Pete as the DH after we acquire Vladdy, so they're pricing it out accordingly. And that's why the two sides are talking past each other.
Have things with Pete and his leech, and the Mets deteriorated to the extent that they're not even talking anymore?
It may be a small sample, but every Met fan I have spoken with agrees that we're mediocre at best going in to ST - with no First Baseman.
I get the standoff and the revaluation of Pete, but we kind of need a First Baseman and a big bat around Lindor and Soto or all that dough for those two guys is a waste on a second tier team.
I still think Pete signs with us as well. It makes too much sense. I do like the Torkelson idea though. My son went to ASU so we watched him and I can’t believe he’s not a stud in MLB. There’s definitely potential. Maybe Baty for him straight up? Change of scenery might benefit both?
La opción de intentar fichar a un 1a base es más realista que la de mover a otros jugadores de su posición natural. La pregunta es si todavía quedan opciones interesantes en la agencia libre para cubrir la posición además de Torkelson.
I agree with Michael Baron that Alonso is the most logical fit for the Mets and himself. But not at the price that Alonso wants. Mets are right to hold yo an offer somewhere in the 3/75M range. Most homegrown players will give their team a hometown discount. Pete wants a hometown bonus. If Pete continues to overvalue his worth, I’m fine moving on from him. Realistically, Pete needs to eat a little crow here in my opinion. Torkelson is not a terrible path to pursue for a year and then see what the market looks like potentially with Guerrero available.
Still don’t understand moving Vientos to first. Keep him at third, have Ronny Mauricio play 1st and trade Squirrel and Baty.
RM has a lot of lefty pop and speed. Since he is a IF he can handle 1B and with the trade gets LA at full-time 2B. Saves some money and adds some youth and speed to the lineup
Long time Mets fan. I was a huge Pete fan until last year when it seemed he crumbled under the walk year pressure. I think he's when way off in his sense of self worth. It seems he's attached to his value 2 years ago and hasn't faced the reality of change. Also how does he feel undervalued being offered $23 million a year. He's not in Freeman or Olsen's class. My suspicion is the hang up is that his 3 year offer to the Mets is much higher, probably $25 million or more.
As it stands, the Mets and Pete are going their separate ways and that's fine. But Vientos is not the answer at 1B. Why mess with a developing young player? Leave him at 3B. One player that Sterns should look into is Yandy Diaz from TB Rays. Solid bat for average and power and handles 1B well. Not sure what it would take to get him since the Rays are such a mess with limited budget, no stadium and uncertain future. Not sure if Michael Baron reads our comments and if he's got anyone's ear in the organization to inquiry why Torkelson and not Diaz, etc. Just curiously

Someone has to blink - and now!

Esto es cierto en cualquier idioma.
Advice from the Gambler for Pete. " You've got to know when to hold them, know when to fold them, know when to walk away, know when to run."

Yandy Diaz would be a really solid option. Underrated
