Mets showed up! Big hits from big guns in offensive explosion against D-backs
The bats came through for New York in a big, big way on Friday. Plus, the true value of Francisco Lindor has been on full display over the past couple of days...
What’s Up with the Mets? ⚾️
The Mets got contributions from up and down the lineup in a wild 10-9 win against the Diamondbacks at Citi Field on Friday (box)
The bats came out swinging by scoring five runs in the first two innings, before adding on three more in the fourth
DH J.D. Martinez went 1-for-4 with three runs scored, a walk and two RBIs, with his two-run home run in the sixth inning proving crucial
SS Francisco Lindor continues to lead by example, going 2-for-4 with one run scored, one walk and one RBI
Despite still nursing a bruised hand, 1B Pete Alonso contributed with an RBI double and a run scored
OF Starling Marte had a monster night at the plate, finishing 2-for-4 with one run scored, a triple, a walk and four RBIs
3B Mark Vientos continued to produce offensively, going 3-for-5 with two RBIs
Most noteworthy, however, is that every single player in the Mets lineup had at least one hit on Friday night, with the lineup recording 14 hits in total
RHP Luis Severino battled through one of his toughest outings of the year, allowing five runs - four earned - on six hits with one walk and four strikeouts in 5.1 innings. He also gave up a home run
It was a mixed night for the bullpen. RHP Dedniel Núñez struck out two and didn’t allow a run in the remainder of the fifth, while LHP Jake Diekman tossed a scoreless inning with one strikeout
RHP Sean-Reid Foley gave up two earned runs on one hit with two walks and one strikeout. RHP Reed Garrett then entered the game and proceed to allow consecutive home runs to Joc Pederson and Christian Walker. Garrett was able to retire the rest of the side to seal the win for New York
The club’s seven extra-base hits were their most in a game this season and their most in a game since September 12, 2023 against Arizona
The Mets improved to 21-4 over their last 25 games against Arizona and are 9-1 against the Diamondbacks dating back to April 24, 2022
David Wright, Mike Piazza, Daniel Murphy and Mookie Wilson will serve as the Mets’ ambassadors on their trip to London next week. Murphy will face off against Phillies icon Chase Utley in a home run contest in Trafalgar Square
Darryl Strawberry 🍓
Mets legend Darryl Strawberry will have his No. 18 jersey retired in a ceremony at Citi Field on Saturday
Strawberry will live on forever as an iconic member of the Mets, and he’s a beloved legend amongst the fanbase
Strawberry was selected first overall by the New York Mets in the 1980 June Draft, and he went on to be crowned NL Rookie of the Year in 1983 after slugging a then-club rookie record 26 homers
He was a seven-time All-Star with the Mets, and will live on forever in franchise history as part of the 1986 World Series winning team
He is still the Mets all-time leader in home runs (252), he ranks second in RBIs (733) and walks (580), third in extra-base hits (469) and runs (662), and fourth in slugging (.520)
Strawberry is cherished and beloved by the Mets fanbase, and Saturday will be a special day as we pay ultimate tribute to one of the most exhilarating, special and naturally-talented players in franchise history.

Francisco Lindor is showing his true value to the New York Mets… ✍️
Since the now infamous team meeting in the wake of the Dodgers debacle, the Mets are 2-0.
In that span, they have blasted 13 runs and have largely taken care of business against the 25-32 Diamondbacks.
Okay, the bullpen is still an absolute heart attack waiting to happen and the team didn’t exactly make life easy for themselves, especially on Friday.
However, the most important factor is that the Mets have shown a lot of life and a lot of heart in the wake of the embarrassing implosion earlier in the week.
And Francisco Lindor has to take a lot of credit for that.
Not only did the star shortstop initiate the team meeting on Wednesday that allowed everyone inside that clubhouse the opportunity to let off some steam, he has since backed up all of that talking with meaningful actions on the field.
He has led by example in a big way ever since that team meeting.
And that’s exactly what you would expect from a star and face of the franchise.
A lot has been made about Lindor’s slow start to this season, and there’s no defending that, but he has never stopped being valuable to the organization overall.
Of course, Lindor will always be judged by on what he does on the field, especially given that he earns $34 million a year. What he does on the diamond will always be the straw that stirs the drink.
However, sometimes it is important to look at the bigger picture and take everything into consideration. Lindor, despite being mired in a lengthy slump, has never stopped being a leader in that clubhouse. He’s never stopped being a mentor for the young guys on the team. And he’s never stopped putting the interests of the team above his own.
That was best personified on Wednesday when, sensing the storm that was threatening to engulf the Mets, he called a team meeting and forced everyone to be accountable for the mess we’ve all had to endure this year. That’s just who Lindor is. He’s a standup guy and he clearly cares about the New York Mets deeply.
He is the leader of this team and he’s not afraid to put himself out there and absorb all the slings and arrows for his teammates.
In all, Mets fans should feel lucky that they have a guy like Lindor at the very heart of the organization.
It proved to be not just talk, too. Since that meeting, the Mets have looked like a different team offensively and they’ve got the job done against a Diamondbacks team that have experienced somewhat of a World Series hangover.
More importantly, the big hitters in the lineup have stepped up to the plate and performed to the back of their baseball cards in the last couple of games. That’s something that hasn’t happened a whole lot this year.
And Lindor has been front and center in that. Knowing that he needed to back up his words, the four-time All-Star went 4-for-4 with a home run and two RBIs on Thursday, quite literally dragging the Mets to victory. Then, on Friday, Lindor had another big night, going 2-for-4 with a walk, a double and a RBI.
That’s the very definition of a star player elevating his game and getting it done in the biggest moments.
He also seems to be getting hot at just the right time. He currently owns a 10-game hitting streak, and is hitting .367/.406/.633/.1.040 with two doubles, two homers, one stolen base, two walks and five RBIs over the last seven days.
Granted, the short-term future still looks pretty grim for this team.
Two wins shouldn’t be seen as a magic cure-all. If the team quickly reverts back to the hot mess it was for all of May, then a mass and ugly selloff will probably follow at the trade deadline.
But, for now at least, this team responded to a boatload of adversity
And they owe a lot of thanks to Francisco Lindor, who has really proved how valuable he is to the New York Mets both on and off the field in the past few days.
Around the League 🚩
The Orioles announced that LHP John Means and RHP Tyler Wells will both undergo season-ending UCL surgery
Aaron Judge became the first Yankee to hit at least 14 homers and 12 doubles in one month after going yard twice against the Giants in San Francisco
The Phillies became the first team to reach 40 wins after beating the Cardinals, 4-2, with SS Edmundo Sosa blasting a mammoth two-run homer
The Padres erupted for 11 hits and nine runs in the eighth inning against the Royals, with Jake Cronenworth going 2-for-5 with 3 RBIs and the go-ahead single
Davis Schneider hit a home run in the 14th inning to deliver the Blue Jays their first walk-off win over the year, beating the Pirates, 5-3
Thank God that the Mets have awakened. Pitchers with elbow injuries keep dropping like flies - when are they going to increase the pitch clock ?? If anyone watched the Yankee game to watch Judge saw once of the worst home plate umpiring I have ever seen - what is Manfred going to give every Bad Ump a Settement ?? How about sending the really bad ones back for retraining-I don’t care how many times they go back. Andrew Steele please tell me why Diaz has not learned a third pitch and why the Mets have not demanded this ? The Mets young starters have learned new pitches.
"RHP Sean-Reid Foley gave up two earned runs on one hit with two walks and one strikeout. RHP Reed Garrett then entered the game and proceed to allow consecutive home runs to Joc Pederson and Christian Walker."
Foley "gave up" two runs since he was responsible for the runs on base when Garrett allowed the first home run.
I'm glad that the Mets had two wins though they gave up nine runs in the second & the Diamondbacks have traditionally done horrible against them. You take your competition as they come, sure, but let's see what they do next.
