Let’s bask in this current thrill ride and make the most of it …✍️
Now, this is more like it.
After two plus months of bad, hard-to-watch baseball and the usual drama we’ve become accustomed to with this team, everything is finally coming together in Queens.
Just like that, the 2024 New York Mets look like an unstoppable juggernaut and a team that could legitimately challenge for a Wild Card spot. They’ve won six games in a row, all of which came after Grimace threw out the first pitch at Citi Field, and have won 12 of their last 16 games overall.
Amazing what a couple of weeks can do for a team.
When all hope of an interesting summer seemed lost in May, we now look set for a fun mighty fun summer with this baseball team.
And it is absolutely paramount we all stay in the moment and enjoy every last second of it.
Let me expand on why.
While this team is hotter than hot right now, we saw a similar stretch earlier in the season, only for the wheels to fall off. Now, granted, this is the first time all year that the Mets have looked this good, but we can’t just forget about the ugly disaster that was May.
After all, this team still has some notable flaws.
The bullpen is gassed and it remains to be seen how well that group holds up through the dog days of summer. Having Edwin Díaz at the peak of his powers would help that cause, obviously. He needs to continue to show he is beyond his early season woes.
It seems this team will go where Edwin Díaz takes them.
The starting rotation is understaffed and simply not as good as other staffs in the National League. It is still anyone’s guess as to what Kodai Senga will be able to offer when he does eventually return. Whenever that is.
The defense still scares the absolute crap out of me and we’ll see if the ballclub’s best hitters can now stay hot and consistently play to the back of their baseball cards the rest of the way.
All in all, I don’t believe the warts have just magically gone away all by themselves. This team will need to play like this day in and day out for a few more weeks in order to persuade the front office not to sell at the trade deadline.
So, to that end, it is vitally important we all live day-by-day with this team and savor the great baseball we’re being treated to.
Let’s not worry about the trade deadline for now. I know I’m already fed up of talking about what the Mets may or may not do in July.
Instead, I just want to bask in the glow of this current red-hot run.
I want to marvel at Francisco Lindor excelling in the leadoff spot and putting together another typical Lindor-type season.
want to enjoy every single mammoth home run that explodes off the bat of Pete Alonso.
I want to make the most of the masterclass that is J.D. Martinez at the plate.
And I want to get back to dropping everything for Díaz and the ninth innings of games.
But, most of all, I just want to stay in the moment with this team and cherish every second of the meaningful baseball that is currently being played.
First and foremost, like all of you, I’m a fan and it sucks when the Mets stink on the diamond. It stinks even more when you have to write about it every day.
So, while I still have my doubts about this team in the long run this season, and while I’m still dubious about their chances of being a playoff team, I’m not going to worry about that right now.
For now, I want to thank the Baseball Gods - and Grimace - for the fact that our summer has been rescued.
No longer do we have to go and take up pickleball or become too invested in the Olympics because the Mets are dead and buried.
No, as of right now, it looks like, and sure feels like, the Mets are back in business and the coming weeks and months should be interesting at the very least.
This is the version of the New York Mets we were all hoping for in 2024.
The last little stretch has been incredibly fun to watch, including the volcanic explosion of the offense in Texas on Monday. Those are the moments we should be clinging on to and making the most of.
So, while we can’t control what happens over the next few weeks and at the trade deadline, we can control living in the moment and enjoying every last second of the current thrill ride we’re on with this team.
It is important we appreciate the good times while they are here.
After all, we’ve had our fair share of bad times already this year, so we all deserve to bask in the glow of what the Mets are doing right now.
Everything else can wait.
Around the League 🚩
Dodgers manager Dave Roberts expects star Mookie Betts to miss 6-8 weeks with a broken left hand
Yankees first baseman Anthony Rizzo could be out for 4-6 weeks with a right arm fracture
Shohei Ohtani went 3-for-5 in the leadoff spot with a pair of doubles, a walk and a stolen base as the Dodgers beat the Rockies, 9-5
Pirates RHP Paul Skenes relied on all five pitches in six innings of one-run ball with seven strikeouts in a 4-1 win over the Reds
Trea Turner returned and Kyle Schwarber blasted a pair of homers as the Phillies piled on nine runs and 18 hits against the Padres
Thairo Estrada delivered a go-ahead three-run homer in the ninth to help the Giants overcome the Cubs in a 7-6 win
You nailed it this morning.Present moment living. One at bat at a time, one inning at a time.Don’t forget about Christian Scott when you look at the pitching.
A couple of weeks ago the experts were talking that the Mets should be sellers, forgetting that a baseball season goes 162 games. In my opinion they need to add and subtract. I have always been a McNeil fan, but if he can't pull it together it's time to part and improve 2b. The rest of the infield is fine. If you can add a better bench bat, do it. And of course keep your eyes wide open for pitching. Don't forget Scott can be brought up. YA GOTTA BELIEVE!!!
