Who’ll stop the rain… ✍🏻
When Max Scherzer accepted his ten-game suspension, it was with the goal in mind of pitching against the rival Braves.
Mother Nature had other ideas.
The Mets’ best laid plans went seriously awry and now the team is facing a doubleheader with a tough match-up in Game 1. With no good options available to them (or really any at this point) it seems like the Mets are focusing more on Game 2 that is a bit more winnable on paper.
In theory, Kodai Senga could have pitched on four days rest but the team is unwilling to push him this early in the season, so now they are left with Denyi Reyes against Spencer Strider. Reyes could pitch great and keep them in the game, but this is certainly an uphill climb and a mismatch on paper.
At this point in the season is accepting losses against the team in first place, a team they will most likely be battling all year, a palatable strategy hoping it pays off at the end of the year? There is no guarantee Senga would defeat Strider but the opportunity for a more competitive game is there.
Any team should be losing with their best players on the field, too.
Every loss counts whether it comes in May or in September, and as we saw last year right in our own backyard at Citi Field (or really, Truist Park), one game could make all the difference. However, in the course of a long season, sometimes everything goes wrong. It’s up to the team on how they weather this particular rough patch. They will have other questions when the team heads to Detroit and both Scherzer and Justin Verlander return, but this doubleheader against the Braves will be a test they have to take before answering those questions.
But the sun will be shining on Citi Field today, finally. Lets hope the sun shines on the Mets and they can somehow sneak by with at least a split.
