A blueprint with the 7-8-9 batters (Taylor, Mullins, and Senger last night) going 8 for 14 with 6 RBIs isn't realistic. What is realistic is the awfulness of the BP. And the awfulness seems to increase day by day. The dream of the starters going deeper helps, but does not eliminate the use of the BP. Did I mention that they've been awful?

Helsley has been an unanticipated nightmare, apparently he throws a very hard straightball. It motivated me to see how Duran has been doing for the Phils...basically the opposite, a save machine. Until losing yesterday, he actually has 6 saves in 7 appearances, allowing only two baserunners in those appearances. He's under team control for two more years...couldn't we have put together a package to equal what the Phils paid? Every guy we got is a rental. Sigh...A great night for us Baty fans...he's slowly gotten his BA above .240 and obp above .300, been a long fight. And at least for one day, I won't have to read about Soto's shortcomings, good stuff.

The bullpen did all it could to lose this game and had the Mets not been up by as many runs as they were this article is written another way about another bullpen implosion after a starter gives the team 7 innings of 2 run ball. It’s almost shocking to have this type of run support for a good pitcher. I can recall many deGrom starts where he would give up one or no runs over 7+ innings only for the pen to blow it and him getting the ND or even loss. I will say the kid wowed by showing he can be a top of the rotation guy and the fact that he didn’t walk a batter should be something the rest of the pitching staff should take notice of. He attacked the Braves which should be the mindset of every pitcher on this team. You don’t need to strike out everyone. You have 8 guys behind you that will get outs for you. Great outing for the kid. Looks like a better Charlie Morton and that guy is still going at 42? My question is why wasn’t he up here earlier? I hope Stearns learns from this. Kids who have stuff that is over powering minor league hitters will play at the major league level because these guys up here are not looking to hit for average. If you have strikeout stuff it’ll play. Bring the kids up faster and then you don’t need to pay big money on your pitching staff. Baty seems to of had something finally click for him and he looks like a major leaguer. It was a good win but it was just one win. Meh.

I think it’s fair to be concerned with Helsley but that game was never once in doubt. I don’t think we need to act like they almost blew it.

But to your latter point, they have to do this way more often to buy back in.

A lot of hitting.

They had a nice win the last time he started, won the series, and then lost to the Nats.

Let's see if they can win the series and then follow up with another good series.

Guy gets his first RBI of the season and then decides to get a few more! Good for him!

The Reds lost a close one. I still figure the Mets will win the final wild card spot, though it very well might go down to the wire. They then have a decent shot at winning a short playoff series and ....

Fans had cause to expect that this team was a credible World Series competitor. But they went with a discount starting rotation again, rejected picking up someone at the deadline, and are wary of rushing prospects, playing for the future. Now we are hoping for a six-week run.

Has a same old, same old feel to it. Enough to win, but not good enough to get the brass ring.

Bravo Nolan! Our St Louis aqussotion has been far from the answer. Knocking on runs and not depending on the long ball is refreshing.

OK Andrew, I honestly always enjoy your posts, but isn't stating that starting pitchers going deep and hitters, well, hitting as a blueprint, kind of you know, Captain Obvious? I don't think telling Senga and Holmes that they need to deep into games or telling hitters to hit is going to work. And let's not forget the Stearn's bullpen whose tag line should be: "Ya Gotta Believe...That NO lead is big enough".
