Mets embarrassed again as they're swept out of Pittsburgh
The road ahead only gets tougher for the Mets as they limp home searching for answers
What’s up with the Mets? ⚾
The disastrous weekend in Pittsburgh continued on Sunday as the Mets were hammered by the Pirates again, this time by the score of 12-1 (box)
RHP Frankie Montas second start with the Mets did not go well, as he surrendered six earned runs in only four innings, on seven hits and a walk. He served up back-to-back home runs to Oneil Cruz and Tommy Pham in the first inning.
Luis Torrens contributed two hits including a solo home run
Francisco Lindor, Pete Alonso, Mark Vientos, and Brett Baty combined to go a disappointing 0-for-16 on the day
The Mets were outscored by the Pirates 30-4 in the three games this weekend
Roster Moves 📰
LHP Richard Lovelady signed to a Major League contract
LHP Colin Poche designated for assignment
Play of the Game 🌟
The play of this game came really early.
Mets’ starting pitcher Frankie Montas was ineffective from the jump, and even the outs he got in the first inning were loud.
With two outs and two on, he had a potential avenue through the frame before Ke’Bryan Hayes singled in two runs. The Mets could have lived with a two-run inning, but instead, Oneil Cruz demolished the very next pitch for a long two-run homer, and the rout was essentially on.

Today’s Game 🗓️
The Mets are off today and will begin a three game series with the Brewers at Citi Field tomorrow
The Mets need to get it together in a hurry, because the road only gets tougher… ✍️
After getting swept by the Pirates in Pittsburgh this weekend, it certainly feels like rock bottom for the 2025 Mets. New York has now dropped 13 of its last 16 games. The offense —which was supposed to be an enormous strength—has mostly been a liability lately, injuries have decimated a starting rotation that was already overperforming, and the bullpen has been overworked to the point that roster moves have to be made almost daily.
And despite all that, the Mets’ 12-15 record this month certainly could have been worse. I’m sure we can all remember much worse June’s than that. The Mets are still just 1.5 games behind Philadelphia in the NL East.
That said, things need to improve in a hurry to prevent the Mets’ situation from looking a lot bleaker at the All-Star break in two weeks.
After an off day tonight, the Mets will open a six-game homestand with the Brewers and Yankees beginning tomorrow. Milwaukee is currently red-hot and rapidly chasing down the Cubs in the NL Central, while the Bombers have led the AL East essentially all year.
The Mets players’ only meeting in Pittsburgh obviously generated a lot of press, but Sunday’s performance did little to prove it made an impact.
Clay Holmes and David Peterson are the two best starting pitchers the Mets still have healthy and making regular starts in their rotation, so the fact that both will throw against the Brewers is a positive.
But for New York to get back on track, it simply needs to get more offensive consistency from its best players.
Francisco Lindor slashed just .204/.259/.369 during the month of June.
Pete Alonso has hit only one home run since June 9th.
Mark Vientos finally returned from injury this weekend but went just 1-for-13 in Pittsburgh.
We all know the Mets beleaguered rotation is swimming against the current right now, but this team’s bread and butter was supposed to be its offense, and it’s time for the bats to start taking some pressure off the arms.
If they can rise to the occasion, it should be enough to maintain the status quo until Kodai Senga, Sean Manaea, and Tylor Megill can return to solidify the pitching staff.
And if they can’t?
Well, things might be looking dramatically different at the All-Star break.
