Don't go for the lack of fire, lack of spirit, overpaid selfish prima donnas, all the emotional stuff. I think that's filler material for sportswriters and feeds the frustrated fans. They just didn't perform. I don't go for the "smug Stearns" and the "preening Soto" slurs either. All of Stearns's trade deadline moves were thought of as pretty good at the time by pundits, given the "all in" credo. Not one turned out well. No one could have predicted or prevented the miserable performances of Manea and Senga and the second half collapse by Peterson. The most ridiculous scapegoating is directed towards Soto, only third in the majors with 120 runs scored and obp of .396.
I’ll keep saying it: it was the hitting, not the pitching, that sank the Mets. Today’s game summed up the season in microcosm. So what if the pitching staff wasn’t perfect? You still have to keep pressure on the other team and tack on runs—and this lineup failed at that all year.
Even Soto went cold today. And how many times did we watch grounders to second and rally-killing double plays? McNeil was dreadful down the stretch, Mullins never reliable, Nimmo overrated, and even Alonso—supposedly the best of the bunch—hit into far too many double plays.
Add in Mendoza’s allergy to small ball—no bunting, no slap hits, no situational play—and what you’ve got is a perfect blueprint for mediocrity.
Yes, small ball! How many times did you see Mets bunt to advance runners? As an old fart, I can remember twice....the entire year. Poor skill in advancing runners. Though they did steal bases at a prolific pace. Watch how the Dodgers and other elite teams perform. Elite teams are also defensively superior and make great decisions in the field.
I can only say,”Thank God it’s over.” What I feared by Early June came to fruition. It didn’t take a baseball savant to understand what likely would happen-only someone objective and familiar with/played the game.
The worst thing about this season was being called out by the owner over attendance and the fans responded by breaking the season attendance record and this is what they give the fans. Nothing. No playoffs. Just a piss poor inept team that did nothing right. The bright spot for me is knowing we should have full season of McClean next year. If he pitches like he did in his small cameo he might be getting awards at the end of the season. They better get those that make decisions in a room and look over this whole team. They should be starting tomorrow.
I know they will give Mandoza a slide this year (they have enough to do without looking for a new manager), but I still say he is wooden in his line ups, afraid to experiment and there is something wrong with the spirit of the Mets - even when they were in 1st place - they don’t act like a TEAM. Wooden , just like the manager - I am not convinced he has the ear of the players , especially the veterans
Sterns - Smug Sterns - :did a crap job in poor trades- no trades - allowing crappy coaching to exists (were the EXCEPTION of 1st base coach who did a super job teaching players how to steal bases
YES, Alonso can stay but if he is interested in breaking the bank asking for a mega contract I say NO. Want contact hitters -
Dump some salary - keep the 3 young pitchers they just brought up and when they construct their 2026 team - be sure you have 1 or 2 good players who ALSO create cohesiveness with all the players. Bring spirit to the team. Last year that person was iglasses (spell wrong)
And they didn’t keep him Mets NOT. A team. They were expensive players each doing their own thing.
Horrible collapse? Yes, but it started when Snug Sterns looked into the camera with us artificial smile and said the Mets were a great team
Let’s get the blame where it belongs - and Cohen better get involved!!
Agree. Stearns thought he had baseball figured out last year and thought he was going to do the same thing this year. McClean looks like a stud. They should grab a Cease or the like. Next year could be the last we see of baseball for awhile so Smug ass Stearns best figure it out and Quick!
On the bright side, this should force Stearns to change his off-season strategy. My concern was that even by making a very early exit from the playoffs would convince Stearns to double down on a bad ideology. Maybe he sould start by actually hiring a GM.
I'm so angry with this team that I hesitate to sully this fine site with my vitriol.
Every member of this squad will carry the pudrid stench of this season with them. Some will vow to never go through this again and some will go to next highest bidder and play out their lucrative careers in relative anonymity. But the stench of five hits and no runs against a sub .500 team on a day that meant everything will permeate their careers.
Today's game was a disgrace to the franchise. Everyone involved in this disaster can leave and never again enjoy the support of one of the most passionate fan bases in baseball.
Keep the three kid pitchers; the rest of you can go pack sand.
I'm not suggesting a direct, cause and effect relationship, but June 13 just happened to be the night someone thought it would be a good idea to shove a rainbow flag in the faces of 40,000 patriotic fans at the end of the national anthem. Pride - in all its forms - does indeed precede a fall.

So here we are. Wait until next year.

Total collapse. Lots of changes need to be made. Something wrong with the lack of fire on this unit.

Agree - Monday should be a WORK DAY for the Mets

It's going to be a very busy winter.

Too bad, they gave what could have been a really fun 2nd half by just playing.500 baseball . A wasted season.

I agree with you about Pride events (I think private stuff should be private), but I hope you're kidding about what is just coincidence.
So this is what 350 million buys
