Notes on Pete Alonso’s remarkable recovery… ✍️

When Pete Alonso was drilled in the hand in Atlanta, it appeared as if the Mets had just suffered a loss that would be incredibly difficult to overcome.

Diagnosed with a bone bruise and a sprained wrist, the expectation was that Alonso would not make his return to the club for at least three-to-four weeks, leaving the club without their biggest power threat for close to a month.

But now, just 11 days later, the Mets shockingly announced that Alonso is returning to the club’s lineup later this afternoon in their series finale against the St. Louis Cardinals.

“No, I’m playing,” Alonso said in response to being asked if there would be any limitations after his return from the injured list. “Full go.”

Alonso’s remarkable return is a big one for the Mets, who went 3-6 in the nine games since he was struck by a pitch in Atlanta (including the game he exited).

Despite missing 11 days, Alonso still leads the National League with 22 home runs (one behind Shohei Ohtani for the major league lead) and is just one RBI shy of the league lead in RBI with 49.

Around the League 🚩

  • Angels RHP/DH Shohei Ohtani continued his home run tear, hitting his league-leading 23rd long ball in the club’s 10-9 loss to the Royals

  • The Giants pulled to within a half-game of the Dodgers in the standings following their 15-0 blowout victory over their division rivals

  • Padres LHP Blake Snell struck out 12 batters facing his former team as the club beat the Rays, 2-0

  • The Reds won their 7th consecutive game with a 10-3 drubbing of the Astros

Yeah, coming back too soon can't possibly go wrong.

And boy, they mishandled Vientos entirely.

Wonder if this will be the game that sets back Pete's still-healing hand for another month or two. Meanwhile, his unexpected return and the corresponding move with bench ornament Vientos is yet another glaring indictment of a dysfunctional management team for this club.
