The return of Panic Citi ✍🏼
During Sunday’s truly embarrassing loss to the Rockies where incompetence was on full display from the very start, SNY’s field reporters Steve Gelbs talked with Yogi Berra’s granddaughter Lindsay about a new documentary about her grandfather and the man beyond the, “Yogisms.”
Perhaps it is fitting then that after yet another series loss to a team with a losing record, the only thought that comes to mind is: it’s getting late early.
There is no getting around it. This team is mess. A real mess.
They’ve lost eleven of their last fourteen, and while the offense scored six runs on Sunday, they had scored just three runs in their previous three games. And the pitching was an absolute no-show on a day the Mets finally scored a few runs.
This team is falling well short of expectations so the question is: who is to blame?
In 1999, the team was underperforming where rumors were swirling about Bobby Valentine’s job security. On June 6 at Yankee Stadium, they made the decision to fire everyone but Valentine after the team’s eight straight loss. Pitching coach Bob Apodaca, hitting coach Tom Robson, and bullpen coach Randy Niemann were all given the boot. Whether it was the changes or the team finally playing up to their potential, they went on a 40-15 run (which is exactly what Valentine promised, or then he said he would deserve the boot) and put together a memorable season that unfortunately fell just short of a World Series.
It is still May, but this team’s performance is unacceptable.
That might be putting it nicely too. Is it on Billy Eppler for putting together a team reliant on and older pitching staff and missing a big bat? Is it on Jeremy Hefner for the rotation’s pitching woes? Or perhaps hitting coach Eric Hinske since this team has already been shut out six times this season?
The wisdom of making a change just to make a change is debatable but there is no doubt that Steve Cohen can not be pleased with how this team is performing. Especially given the offseason spending.
Perhaps things settle a bit now that Max Scherzer and Justin Verlander are back in the rotation and perhaps the offense starts playing back to what they are capable of, but if things continue to spiral someone will have to take the fall. Unfair or not. Hopefully they will have the decency to not fire managers in the dead of the night on a road trip which would also be progress for this organization.
There is still plenty of season left, and perhaps this was rock bottom for the 2023 team. With the extended playoffs they of course still have a shot at the postseason and as Yogi would say, “It ain’t over until it’s over.”
