The ghosts of Christmas past… ✍️
In The Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens, Ebenezer Scrooge is visited by three ghosts, the first of which is the ghost of Christmas past.
This ghost reflects Scrooge’s memories and this holiday season Mets fans are also seemingly visited by the ghost of Mets seasons past.
So far, this has been an underwhelming offseason for the Mets, especially with them missing out on Yoshinobu Yamamoto. With visions of late season collapses and losing seasons dancing in their heads, fans are already prepared to write this season off.
They do indeed have an uphill climb on their hands.
The ghost of Mets present is a bit of a more optimistic sort. The ghost of Christmas present shows Scrooge all of the good things he could be doing with his wealth but chooses not to.
So too Mets fans should see the good that is here instead of what isn’t.
The trumpets will sound once again when Edwin Díaz returns to the field and hopefully recaptures his elite form and the buzz that would fill Citi Field when he enters the game.
They also have an ace with the most devastating pitch in the league in Kodai Senga, the most prolific power hitter in the game since 2019 in Pete Alonso, and arguably the best shortstop in the game in Francisco Lindor.
Brandon Nimmo has become a very good all around player and Francisco Alvarez showed tremendous potential and could take another step forward in 2024.
Everything has to break right for them to be competitive but at least the potential is there.
In a Christmas Carol, the final spirit to visit Scrooge is the Ghost of Christmas Yet to Come who shows Scrooge that it’s not too late to change his fate. There is still plenty of offseason still to come so too can the Mets change their fate. Even if they continue to make marginal upgrades, this is the season for miracles so perhaps the Mets will get another one after the previous generations of Mets fans each got one.
So happy holidays Mets fans and remember, Ya Gotta Believe.
