Nothing wrong with kicking the tires on both pitchers. Would be nice if something can be worked out with Jose. A good guy to have around and a real good utility man. Soto is and should be center stage. As Reggie once was said to say, he is the straw that stirs the drink!

Syndergaard burned a lot of bridges with the fans on his way out of town, I doubt he would evoke the sentimental response you suggest if the Mets were to give him a minor league deal.

I am curious about which player checks off this box. “Traded for an edgy player with an attitude reminiscent of ‘86?” (sincere question, not being snarky.). The only trade I can recall is Jose Siri. For what it’s worth, I’d rather that they signed either Syndergaard or Familia instead of Drew Smith.

I'm sure we're done with pitching. There are a lot of arms in camp looking for maybe -- maybe -- one last role, but even there, it's a matter of being an insurance piece more than anything else.

The only real question is who will be the sixth starter come April, and it wouldn't be Syndegaard or Familia no matter what. (One other question is a lefty in the 'pen if Mintner isn't ready by Opening Day, but that's not really a roster question. It's his job when he's good to go.)

I see today's news about Montas...at least it gives Megill more of a chance. He was excellent toward the end of last season. Maybe he'll break through and be consistent this time around.

I was thinking the exact same thing. He made a little mechanical adjustment before coming back up -- he went from landing on the ball of his foot and kind of tumbling over his front leg to planting it a lot flatter and driving through, and that got him more directional toward the plate and down in the strike zone a lot more consistently.

I noticed it right away in his start on Aug. 30, and he ended up being really solid the rest of the way. Over his last six starts he dropped his season ERA from 4.82 to 4.04 and we won them all. I think that earns the man a shot at the rotation.

Rounded out the pitching staff with a starter in his prime who has a track record of success? No check, no check, no check. Fried, Burnes, Snell.
