It's time for you and Rich McLeod to come to the realization that it's not going to happen. David Stearns has made it abundantly clear that the Mets are going with Vientos as their primary DH. If you don't understand why, then you haven't been paying attention since the mid season veteran sell off, last season. The focus of 2024 is to evaluate the talent the Mets already have in house, both at the major league and minor league levels. David Stearns and his new team in the organization need to see what they have before they can move forward. So, get used to seeing Vientos and Baty and Jett Williams, Drew Gilbert, Ryan Clifford, Mike Vasil, Christian Scott, Dominick Hamel and Blade Tidwell making their way to CitiField this year and next. Signing JD Martinez or any other aging veteran serves no purpose for this team, this year, especially if it blocks one of these youngsters from getting playing time.
I think that there should be nearly 500 plate appearances for Vientos, even if they sign JD. One factor that everyone seems to overlook: Martinez would be a great role model for some of the young players. He was known to help his teammates on the Red Sox, discussing his approach to hitting. It couldn’t hurt.
I'm curious why so many seem so opposed to giving Vientos a legitimate shot at DH. If this is a team that is, at best, hoping for a wild card spot, why not just give him a long runway and see what he can do. We'll never know if he only gets these small windows. I, personally, would love to see what he can do playing every day for a good 3-4 months, which he hasn't had the opportunity to do yet.
If I was Stearns I would sign Soler to a multi-year contract. It is rare for a hitter as good as Soler not to have the Draft Pick compensation tied to him. The Whiz Kid should realize that you can not just flip the switch in 2025 and be a Great Team especially with all the one year contracts the Mets have. The Mets have been Awful at the DH position since its inception. Sign Soler and the issue would be solved for a few years. He needs to move quickly before the Giants sign him !! JD wants a lot of money for someone with a bad back - if the Whiz Kid really wants to roll the dice on him I hope the contract language protects the team. I am just really sick of all the drama and want this off season to be over already.
Have you taken a moment to think about why Soler is available almost every single year? Yes, he can hit, but that's all he does. He seems to be a manager's worst nightmare; he doesn't hustle and is often injured. When you have a rookie manager and young impressionable players on your roster, that's the last thing you want to have around. But you want to give him a multi year contract? Please!
After the Cohen's fruitless splurge it would appear that the FO is now engaged in the type of fiscal analytics that Cohen uses in his "day job" - hence the "far apart" status on Martinez. I suspect the FO has a value assigned to Vientos as DH versus paying an outsized premium for J.D. and that value proposition just doesn't add up as a prudent investment.
