Stats of the Day 📊

2B Brett Baty’s second inning home run left his bat at 113.9 mph - the hardest-hit batted ball of the second baseman’s MLB career so far (H/T Sarah Langs)
SS Francisco Lindor has now reached base safely at least three times in four consecutive games - the first player in MLB to achieve that this season

Play of the Game ⭐️
There were several candidates to pick from, including Starling Marte’s walk-off winner.
However, were it not for the play I’ve selected, the Mets may not have even survived until extra innings.
In the top of the eighth, with two runners on and two outs, Max Kepler lined a hit into right field to send Nick Castellanos home. It looked certain that the Phillies were going to take the lead and have two runners in scoring position.
However, Juan Soto had other ideas. The rightfielder flashed an arm any Gold Glover would be proud of with a dart to the plate that, even though it was slightly offline, Hayden Senger was able to grab and quickly get across to apply the tag on Castellanos and get the out.
Soto’s money throw, combined with Senger’s quick instincts, insured that the Mets got out of the inning with the game tied, paving the way for more extra inning heroics later on.

Today’s Game 🗓️
The Mets are off on Thursday and will head to Washington to start a four-game series against the Nationals on Friday.
Something special appears to be in the air with these 2025 Mets… ✍️
Let’s start off with some solid gold stats…
The Mets are now riding a seven-game win streak after going a perfect 7-0 on the homestand.
They have the best record in baseball at 18-7.
Oh, and the team’s 12-1 start at Citi Field in 2025 is the best 13-game home start in franchise history.
Yes, the stats certainly paint a pretty picture for the New York Mets right now.
And, when you take into account the eye test, the gut feel, and all the positive vibes swirling around Citi Field right now, it is almost impossible not to come to the conclusion that there is something very special about the 2025 Mets.
Okay, sure, we’re still in April, and there is a lot of baseball to be played. And, as we’ve seen too many times before, things can change in an instant in just a day in this wonderful sport.
Good starts don’t always mean a whole lot. Nor do bad starts. I mean, does anyone really believe that the Braves will be this bad the rest of the way in 2025? I certainly don’t.
Anyway, with all that said, we can only judge what is happening right now, and the 2025 Mets look legit.
Wednesday was a true case in point.
By sweeping a very talented Phillies team and improving their lead in the NL East to five games, the Mets sent a very clear message to the rest of Major League Baseball that they should be taken seriously as an incredibly formidable force this year.
The Mets are red-hot right now, and they showed a packed and electric Citi Field throughout the course of the homestand just what they are capable of.
The only team in the majors this year to have won at least six straight on multiple occasions, the Mets look every inch a team that could go on another deep postseason run in October.
It is also how they are winning games that only further raises the ceiling of what this ballclub could do in 2025.
The never-say-die mentality that was the bedrock of the run to the NLCS in 2024 has been on full display in 2025, and its presence was felt in the air once again on Wednesday.
With the game tied late, the Mets got a big-time defensive play from Juan Soto and Hayden Senger to help force extra innings. They then survived losing Edwin Díaz to cramp, thanks largely in part to Max Kranick’s sorcery to get out of a bases-loaded jam. Then, after Pete Alonso continued his April for the ages with yet another clutch hit, an unlikely hero emerged in Starling Marte. The veteran outfielder, who has been relegated to bit-part status this season, stepped up to the plate and hit a walk-off single to secure a magic ending to a perfect homestand.
These Mets just don’t quit. They don’t know how to. It is simply not in their DNA.
They just find and invent new ways to win baseball games every single day, no matter the odds facing them.
It is that exact kind of spirit and mental fortitude that helps make forever heroes deep in October.
Another sign that these Mets are special is the depth. Jeff McNeil and Francisco Alvarez look set to return on Friday, but Brett Baty might have a role to play at some point after an absolute no-doubter home run in the series finale. In Alvarez’s absence, Luis Torrens has emerged as the best backup catcher in the game.
Players up and down that lineup are making sizable contributions each and every day. The bullpen has delivered all season long so far, boosted by the emergence of Kranick, who has been one of the stories of the year so far. And the starting pitching has benefitted from the David Stearns effect. Mets starters own a 2.34 ERA - the best mark in baseball. They’ve also combined to allow just five home runs all season - every other rotation has allowed at least 10.
And therein lies the rub. The bullpen has been magic even with Díaz being up-and-down. The starting rotation has emerged as the best in baseball even without Sean Manaea and Frankie Montas. And the Mets are the best team in baseball even without their starting catcher and with Juan Soto having not yet been Juan Soto.
Soto will not hit .233 the rest of the way. There is no way that happens. You figure Brandon Nimmo will eventually wake up offensively. Francisco Alvarez worked on his approach and mechanics before getting hit, and looked set for a big year. Manaea pitched like an ace in 2024, and there is no reason why he can’t do the same in 2025 once he’s healthy.
So, while it is only April, and pennants are not won in April, it is hard not to get excited about this Mets team right now. They are cooking with some special kind of sauce, and they look poised to remain the best team in baseball.
More importantly - the best is also likely still to come with this team.
Something special is happening in Queens right now, and we should all embrace it and enjoy it every single step of the way.
Around the League 🚩
OF Pete Crow-Armstrong hit a three-run homer and finished with four RBIs and two stolen bases to help the Cubs come from behind to beat the Dodgers, 7-6
OF Aaron Judge went 2-for-4 in the Yankees’ 5-1 win over Cleveland, and the superstar slugger is now hitting .415 through 94 at-bats
1B Nick Kurtz made his MLB debut for the A’s on Wednesday and made an instant impression, hitting an RBI single in his first MLB at-bat in a 5-2 win over the Rangers
LF James Wood hit a mammoth leadoff home run to help the Nationals beat the Orioles, 4-3
SS Oneil Cruz blasted a 463ft home run and LHP Andrew Heaney struckout nine across six scoreless innings as the Pirates shutout the Angels, 3-0
This team is so fun to watch!!! #LFGM
What gets me about this team is the chemistry. It's (pardon the pun) amazing. Over the length of the season, it's going to be the essential factor in getting there, the force multiplier to get the most out of a very talented roster.
I mean, aside from Lindor, Alonso and (now) Acuna, no one is really hitting. But we're getting hits in key spots and winning ballgames. It's special.
And we're about to get even stronger. Manaea coming back is going to be especially big. Once he's fully up to speed, we're in a six-man rotation with everyone going six- or seven-plus instead of five-plus, and then it's really cranking.
I wouldn't want to try and come into Citi Field and try and play us in the second half this year when our roster is full and everyone is in midseason form. Talk about a gauntlet. #LGM 🍎
