Yesterday's game was not quite "same old, same old," though they did lose.
The starter did well. We saw with another promising starter that there will be growing pains. But six innings, one run against the Phillies? Impressive. The shutdown game a starter needed to give.
Wheeler shutting you down is not too embarrassing. They only made one error, which is not why they lost. The bullpen as a whole was good. One run vs. Phillies is fine.
I liked the attempt to steal off Wheeler. Take some chances. Do more on the bases.
There wasn't much else, but an overall clean game is a start. Yes, they needed more offense.
Anyway, I want Stearns gone. Find someone else. You have the money, talent, and prime time location to build a good team. This guy is not doing it.
The team also needs to do the basics better. Whatever the reason, and coaching has some agency, they digressed there. Embarrassing.
IF Sotos drive had cleared the fence we'd be singing a different tune perhaps. if Diaz & Alonzo were here they'd be better? I was one who lobbied to get rid of Alonzo on this site so I was wrong. Finally, it's stunning to see the Stat that the 3 guys that were brought in have only 38 games played.
Stearns signed Williams and Weaver in addition to obtaining Peralta and Myers, so I don't think it's fair to say he did next to nothing pitching wise. At the time we all thought getting Peralta was a major coup, remember? There's more fault to be found for the Polanco signing and Semien trade and while Robert didn't work out, it turns out he didn't pay much for him (Acuna has flopped for the Sox). Main problem is too many guys playing out of position. Regarding Mendoza not getting on guys who "run through signs", I remember Vientos doing that and getting thrown out at home. Have there been other instances of guys running through signs and getting thrown out?
Hi Joel. I was referring to the starting pitching. Yes, not every move Stearns has made has been a bust. And yes we all applauded the Peralta move, but I also said at the time that Peralta alone wasn't enough, as did others. And that's what we're saying here. Again, two things can be true at the same time. Running through signs was just one example of players making stupid mistakes, so it was meant as a wider point. I'm sure Vientos wasn't the only one, but also, Vientos has done it more than once and once should be enough for it to get called out. You let that slide once and all standards go out the window. May seem harsh, but we aren't covering Little League here. This is the big leagues. Standards and accountability should be high
I don't see how stability can be a factor with the trade deadline on the horizon and a 34-48 record that doesn't really tell the depths of this team's futility. Cohen's ego, or lack thereof, will determine Stearns' fate with the team.
Hi Harvey. The stability isn't in relation to this season. It is in relation to keeping Stearns beyond this season. That's the argument being made here. There is a suggestion Cohen would want to keep Stearns because he doesn't want instability, but if Stearns isn't up to the job, then he should go. So that's what the stability part is about, not about this season at all
I think Stearns should be fired. However, I take issue with "And, without having a Plan B, Stearns has consistently played Mark Vientos and Brett Baty out of position, which has led to a regression in Baty’s all-round game. Vientos has struggled at first while also being mostly a non-factor offensively." I'd say Vientos doesn't have a position, he's a DH. Can't blame Stearns for Baty not hitting. I've been a fan, but he's had a protracted opportunity and not made good. If you want to cast blame, then say that the organization has failed in its evaluation of its own prospects, i.e., Vientos and Baty. On the other hand, they look smart in having been willing to part with Acuna and Jett Williams. To repeat, it's time to give Mauricio a long run and see if he goes the way of Baty or figures out how to get on base.
You can't blame Stearns for Baty not hitting, no, but maybe being jerked around has been a contributing factor. Who knows. Maybe. As for Vientos, if he's a DH, then technically playing him at first is playing him out of position if he has no position. And those comments were part of a wider point on bad decisions having knock-on effects, so just singling that out and taking issue with it is taking my overall point out of context. But, again, I agree with you on Mauricio.
There’s a clear disconnect between the strategy Sterns used in Milwaukee and what he has done here. Back then he would have never committed $108 million in salary to 4 players - Bichette, Robert Jr, Polanco and Semien. Would he have signed Frankie bloody Montas for $43 million to the Brewers? Never. So the question is, has Sterns changed because he now has money and has no knowledge of how to spend it properly or is Cohen demanding he make big splashes?
Well said, Andrew Steele. Stearns' ego couldn't take Cora. If (when?) Stearns is removed...

The sunk cost theory says some keep a losing bet in hopes of a rebound when in reality it's just better to cut losses and move on. It is an ego thing.
