Great job by Stearns 👏 would have liked another bat. Mullins is an upgrade over Taylor but he’s another low batting avg hitter with a little pop. I’m glad we didn’t overpay for a starter when we have 2 prospects who look ready to contribute.
Disagree. That fact that each acquisition is a rental makes a big difference. Bednar and Duran were under control for 1-2 years but Stearns apparently didn't want to pay the asking price. If the Mets go all the way, Stearns looks like a genius. If not, they'll have spent quite a lot of capital for nothing. I'm heartened to see Mullins has actually hit in July. Let's pray he can keep it going. I'm surprised the Mets didn't trade any of their four young infielders. The other thing that's notable is that Stearns's people don't leak, which is a good thing.
True they’re rentals but with Cohen’s money I feel like we can sign almost anyone we want to so I’m not that concerned. Also, I’m glad we didn’t have to give up any of our really top prospects.
Hoping for the best, October will tell if the moves made will make the difference in late October. I get the big upgrade to the pen, but will the rotation be able to make their innings meaningful. We shall see.
Solid B. Why the Mets soured on Gilbert as he never got his shot dumbfounds me. I saw plenty of clips of this kid diving and making plays while the bat seemed to play which is again in the minors but the Mets had time during their June swoon to give him 2/3 weeks and Stearns just said he was on their radar for his recent play. Whether that was a fake comment to raise his stock we will never know. The rotation seems shaky to me and If they can’t figure out how to pitch 6/7 innings all the arms we got will be spent for October. Fingers crossed. LGM.
Maybe they never gave him a shot because they thought he would flounder and trade value would disappear? I'm surprised that they haven't even broached Holmes going to the bullpen (at least not publicly acknowledge). Seems painfully obvious he can't possibly go 6 innings.
He will go to the pen when Megil comes back and that won’t be until September when rosters expand anyway. Having him back there able to go 4/5 in the playoffs will be huge. I think you’re right about Gilbert. Although if that kid becomes another PCA? Oy
Good haul. I'm sure Stearns would have loved to grab Gallen or Alcantara, but not at a premium. The bullpen was the greater need. And wow, did we grab three great arms to slot right into the mix.
Personally, I would have liked to bring Harrison Bader back (I didn't want to lose him to begin with), but Mullins will be fine. Robert maybe has the bigger upside and has "change of scenery guy" written all over him, but no way was Tong going to Chicago for him, especially with the two $20 million options hanging on Robert's contract.
So, kudos to Stearns for getting the next best thing for next to nothing. And it's entirely possible Mullins turns out to be the better deal regardless. He can play. Maybe he's the change of scenery guy.
So, the #4 prospect is a 20 y/o CFer. A few years away, at best, but I wonder if he influenced the Gilbert move. BTW editor ... he is playing for Brooklyn, a high A league, not AA.
Should also note: heard that while Mets had fallen out of love with Gilbert, they're very much in love with Carson Benge, convinced he's on a fast track to be an impact hitter. Last year's 1st-round pick out of Oklahoma St. is age 22 and he's tearing it up at AA.

I'm excited but I hope the offensive lineup wakes up after sleepwalking in SD.

I hope you're right but .229 is .229.
He hasn't had a great year, that's for sure. And it's sad .229 is an upgrade from what we have. But there it is.

If you're speaking of Benge, I believe he was promoted to AA about four weeks ago.

The "Down on the Farm" section of today's column says:
"CF A.J. Ewing (No. 4 prospect, Double-A) ..."
