Watch out Barry Bonds, there’s a new homer hungry dynamo nipping at your heels. Aaron Judge’s 63 home runs last season? Yeah, sure, that’s cute. But it won’t be long before he has yet another long ball record get claimed away by a member of New York’s other squad.
Yeah, that’s right. This is Pete Alonso’s world and we’re all just living in it.
The right-handed first base of the New York Metropolitans is blasting the ever-loving tar out of the baseball right now, homering four times over his last three games. In fact, he’s on such a prolific pace right now that he’s on track to blow every record out of the water.
“But Rich, how could that ever be possible?”
Well, reader, I’ll tell you. That’s right, Pete Alonso – New York’s true king of clout – is on pace for a whopping 90 home runs this season. Ninety!
Just for context, that would blow past Bonds’ major league record for a single-season by 17 and absolutely shatter Judge’s AL-record mark from last year by nearly 30. Those folks in Cooperstown sure better be getting the history books ready.
What’s that now? It’s only been how many games?
Ah, yes… nine.
Okay, yeah, maybe we’re going a little overboard here. But it is important to note how ridiculous Alonso has been with his power to start the season. Yes, it’s only been nine games and of course he’s not going to hitting a ten-piece shy of 100 dongs this season, but this is just a reminder that Alonso has been one of the game’s premiere power hitters ever since he entered the league in 2019.
Since debuting in the majors four years ago, Pete Alonso leads all major leaguers with 151 home runs. That’s 12 more than Aaron Judge, 22 more than Kyle Schwarber and 38 more than Mike Trout in that same time span. Alonso also leads all major leaguers with 390 RBI since his debut, and is 22 runs batted in ahead than the next closest hitter.
Thus far this season – yes, in slightly over one week – Alonso is tied with Bryan Reynolds for the most long balls in the league with five. Pistol Pete is also just one of nine batters in the game right now with double-digit RBI.
So yeah, maybe New York’s power-hungry polar bear won’t challenge the likes of the all-time greats this season solely based on a nine-game sample size, most of which have come against the Miami Marlins. But hey, the track record shows that this pop ain’t no fluke. In any given year, at any given time, Pete Alonso is capable of going off like no other. After all, he has been the most consistent power bat in the game for some time now.
You better watch out.
