The Mets have gotten little production from their DHs 📝
When the new collective bargain agreement was finally agreed upon between the two sides, one of the changes that fans thought would be beneficial to the Mets was the implementation of the universal designated hitter. The Mets had quite a few bat-first players on the roster that were without a position when spring training got underway.
Despite a hot spring, Robinson Canó has done very little at the plate since the start of the season. He is currently batting .195/.233/.268 with just one home run and three RBI while serving as the Mets’ primary designated hitter.
Overall, the Mets haven’t gotten much production out of the position. As of this writing, they are hitting a woeful .194/.294/.272 which is good for -0.2 fWAR and puts them 20th in the league for that position.
Before his breakout game against the Phillies, Dominic Smith was struggling just as badly. He was hitting a paltry .167/.295/.195 with zero home runs and just four RBI.
The Mets other option is J.D. Davis who hasn’t gotten much playing time so far this season. He has been a little better than the others and is hitting .231/.375/.385 with one home run and two RBI this year. He recently suffered a contusion on his foot after being hit by a pitch in the final game of their series in St. Louis.
Bottom line is that the Mets aren’t getting production from their designated hitters yet except for when they put Pete Alonso or Francisco Lindor in the role.
Either way, the organization has some decisions to make as the roster size is due to get cut down to twenty-six players on Monday at noon. Would the Mets make the bold move to demote Smith? Do they cut ties with the fading Canó? Perhaps they send Luis Guillorme - a left-handed hitter with quality bat-to-ball skills and is a whiz in the field - to Triple-A? Or, maybe it will be the speedy Travis Jankowski? After that hopefully the designated hitter sorts itself out when the remaining options get more consistent at-bats.
