The Mets defeated the Nationals 2-1 to split the series in Washington (box)
LHP David Peterson was solid in his return to the rotation without an opener. He gave up one run in five innings while walking three and striking out three
The bullpen combination of Huascar Brazobán, Brooks Raley, Luke Weaver, and Devin Williams were stellar. Combined they did not allow any runs and they gave up just one hit and one walk to seal the victory
SS Bo Bichette got the big hit with the bases loaded. He drove in two with a single to account for all of the Mets runs for the day

RHP Kodai Senga (lumbar spine inflammation) will begin a minor league rehab assignment tomorrow for Single-A St. Lucie
Play of the Game ✨
It’s been no secret that Bo Bichette has struggled so far this season, but he is starting to heat up at the plate. He hit two home runs in a game against the Nationals earlier this week, but in a losing effort.
In the series finale against the Nationals on Thursday, his big hit ended up being the difference-maker in the game. With the bases loaded and one out in the third inning, he hit a ball up the middle to bring home two runs. That would be all of the scoring for the day, but thankfully, it was enough to grab the win and a series split with Washington.
Who’s Hot? 🔥
Over his last five games, Bo Bichette is hitting .348/.375/.783 with a double, three home runs, nine RBI and five runs scored
Over his last ten games, Juan Soto is hitting .359/.444/.744 with five home runs, ten RBI, 4 stolen bases, and 11 runs scored
Over his last 11 games, Carson Benge is hitting .392/.415/.431 with 20 hits, two doubles, six RBI and 11 runs scored
Devin Williams is un-scored upon in his last ten relief outings, having allowed just two hits and two walks against 12 strikeouts over 9.2 IP

Next up, Tobias Myers - should he stay in the rotation? ✍🏻
During spring training, it seemed like the Mets were blessed with an abundance of starters. They had Freddy Peralta, Nolan McLean, David Peterson, Clay Holmes, Sean Manaea, Kodai Senga, Christian Scott, Tobias Myers, and Jonah Tong all vying for rotation spots.
At the end of spring, the Mets went with Peralta, McLean, Senga, Peterson, and Holmes in their rotation, Manaea and Myers in the bullpen, and Scott and Tong in the minors. Now their rotation is in shambles due to both injury and underperformance, and they don’t have many options to turn to at the moment, either in the major or minor leagues.
Holmes is out for the foreseeable future with a broken leg. Senga was struggling before he ended up on the IL with lumbar spine inflammation, and is only now starting a rehab assignment. Peterson just returned to the rotation after needing an opener for his last four starts, although he did pitch well enough on Thursday to at least be in the conversation for another start next week against the Reds. Scott is now in the rotation, and while Tong was being considered for a spot start this weekend in Miami, he has been up and down in Triple-A and probably isn’t ready to be here yet.
And of course, Manaea is clearly out of the question since he owns a 6.26 ERA and looks like he might not have anything left or, at the very least, is in need of surgery for the loose bodies in his elbow that derailed his season in 2025.
The team tried Zach Thornton against the Nationals with mixed results this past week, and now they need someone to pitch against the Marlins, so they are turning to Tobias Myers.
So far this season, Myers has mostly pitched out of the bullpen and he is 0-1 with a 3.41 ERA in that role. As a starter during his career, he is 8-7 with an ERA of 3.43. As a reliever lifetime, he is 2-2 with a 2.54 ERA. He did serve as an opener once earlier this season for a two-inning start.
Myers has been valuable being the long man out of the bullpen this season with many of their starters not going deep into games, but the time has come out of sheer need to put him into the rotation, at least for a day. A.J. Minter should be back soon, which will help shore up the bullpen and could allow the Mets to put Myers in the rotation permanently, although they have to stretch him out over the next month or so in this role.
As for Senga, there’s no way the Mets can count on him to be productive once he returns. In fact, it’s not clear how Senga fits at all when his rehab clock runs out - they can keep him on rehab assignment for 30 days before being forced into a decision, so they have time at least to see what happens with him and the rest of the pitching staff.
The team is running short on arms to start games for them, and Myers is more than capable of filling in that role without hurting the bullpen too much, at least for now and as long as he’s productive. And the series against Miami will be the first step in figuring out if Myers can indeed be a productive starter.
They desperately need him to be since they are running out of options, and it’s not even June. I feel like we have seen this movie before, too.

Last year through June, Peterson pitched and acted like a top of the rotation starter. Wishing him well in finding that formula as it is badly needed to sustain a comeback into post season relevance.
