Mets President of Baseball Operations David Stearns spoke with reporters from the GM Meetings in San Antonio, Texas on Monday and said the following:
The Mets officially extended the $21.05 million qualifying offer to Pete Alonso, Luis Severino and Sean Manaea
The club remains interested in signing Manaea to a new contract, and said the qualifying offer is the first step in that process
They’re looking to add “multiple” starting pitchers this winter
Having an ace for the rotation would help, but he wouldn’t commit to acquiring a “name brand” ace this winter
The entire major league coaching staff will return in 2025 and have the same roles as they did in 2024
Brandon Nimmo is expected to remain in left field primarily in 2025, and will explore free agency and trade options for centerfield
He would not comment specifically on a potential pursuit of Juan Soto in free agency
They will be “keeping in touch” with Scott Boras regarding Pete Alonso
Understanding there’s a lot of financial flexibility offered from ownership, it is no limitless with the Mets and they will be cognizant of those boundaries - there is no hard set limits with the payroll
He is confident Mark Vientos can play either first or third base
The qualifying offer tied to external free agents is not a boundary for the Mets - they could sign none, one or multiple free agents tagged with a qualifying offer
Regarding declining Phil Maton’s option, they wanted to remain flexible at this juncture of the off-season - they agreed to stay in touch over the course of the winter
