Mets President of Baseball Operations David Stearns spoke with reporters from the GM Meetings in San Antonio, Texas on Tuesday and said the following:
Ronny Mauricio is progressing from his ACL injury, but has not resumed baseball activities yet - his knee is making progress, and they expect him to be healthy for spring training despite his slow progress
They were pleased with Luisangel Acuna’s late-season performance and defense in particular in the big leagues, but also recognizes his performance was in a small sample size
They’re not closing the door on Brett Baty possibly shifting to the outfield - he is now capable of playing second base and they were considering adding him to a playoff roster for that position
They want to allow their young players an opportunity in the big leagues, regardless of what they decide to do on the external markets this winter
They’re still at the very early stages in their conversations with potential free agents
They’re confident Kodai Senga will have a normal off-season, which they believe will lead to a productive spring training and season. But they will be pursuing depth in their pitching staff
He would be comfortable with Jeff McNeil as their everyday second baseman in 2025
Jett Williams still has to make progress in the minor leagues, but can be a quality centerfielder going forward. Where he ultimately plays will be dictated by roster need
They’d love to have José Iglesias back with the Mets next season
