I don't agree that this is just about accommodating Senga. They have Holmes who only threw 75 or 80 innings last year, Megill who threw less than 140 innings and Peterson with 145, the latter two includes their MiL innings. We saw what happened to Seve and Manea when they pitched full seasons last year with innings totals jumping significantly and they both ran out of gas in the Playoffs.
The ideal right now would be for a regular 6 man rotation and the starters regularly giving 6 if not 7 innings to reduce the strain on the bullpen.
Good point but Baron also makes a good case. Not a single "innings eater" on the whole starting staff. A talented starting staff but all of them start to lose it in the 6th or 7th.
Excellent analysis....an Xtra inning from starters and the offense might need to be juiced a bit. Being manager of the Mets is NOT an easy job with all the critical decisions that must be made with the available tools he has..I have a new appreciation for the difficulties of running a team.
Once again, the disturbing sign not all is well with baseball. With pitching casualties rampant in all of pro ball, it’s easy to forget the greatest concern in recent years is the number of TJ’s on youth athletes. I want to see the best beat the best-not pitchers who would otherwise never make the majors. Pitching talent is diluted and teams continue with an epidemic of highly paid non-participants
You're right about it being a serious problem. Is it my imagination but was there a time when there were a fair number of paint-the-corners breaking ball guys who didn't throw heat? Where have those guys gone?
Mendoza and Heffner have been ultra conservative in pushing starting pitchers and using reliever on consecutive days. Both Peterson and Senga were taken out of games early this week despite pitching on 5 days rest. Not pitching Diaz on Friday and Sunday impacted both games.
Sign David Robertson.
