The worst kept secret in spring training history is no longer. The kid should be given lots of rope to figure out how to be a major leaguer. He seems to have a very even keel about him and he will need that should he get into an 0-16 or worse slump. I’m sick of this “protecting” guys against lefties. You want him to potentially be an all star? He needs to hit lefties and from what I’ve seen so far that doesn’t seem to be an issue for him. Tarik Skubal is a guy nobody hits so with him being the cream of the crop let the kid play. Good for the kid. He won the job. Give him the ABs and let’s not ruin him like they have with players past and current. Vientos, Mauricio, Acuna.

The other side of the coin is that you can't let your non-starters go stale and Taylor has got to get in some games. I don't know if it's fair to accuse the mets of ruining the three guys you listed. It's different for a non-contender but a win-now team may not have the luxury of letting a prospect who's not hitting have a 25 game run as a starter. There were times Acuna looked badly overmatched and Mauricio was basically finished after he got two strikes on him.

Very true. I think Acuna is going to be player though and going to the white Sox is probably the best case scenario for him then. Mauricio looked better this spring and if opt outs happen next year I’d get him to first base honestly. He has great hands and is tall. He should give up the switch hitting.

Plenty of HOFers were protected from tough matchups early in their career. Vientos got plenty of chances at the Apple

The thing I like about this is the Mets are not asking Benge to be the savior for the franchise. The Mets have domes this far too many times. See: Darryl Strawberry and Dwight Gooden.

When I read about "best position players..." I had to think about Crow-Armstrong but that's water under the bridge. Turning the page, I hope they keep Hudson hoping he has a 2024 party with Vientos. Lovelady doesn't have much ceiling, Brujan isn't needed, Young has never hit in the majors, and don't see why they'd carry Rortvedt as a third catcher.
